Boeing Research and Technology is seeking an Engineering Manager (Microelectronics Research & Development Team) for the SSED team reporting to SSED Senior Manager. This manager will lead a team of 12-15 SSED engineers focused on the characterization and test of ICs for aerospace and defense applications, to include extreme environments, resilient edge processing, and RF microsystems.

Thisposition will sit out of Tukwila, WA.

The successful candidate will manage and build organizational talent with a team of highly educated engineers and scientists, will have responsibility for personnel and infrastructure, and will partner with portfolio managers within and outside Mission Systems Technologies to ensure successful execution of programs and projects and to capture new business.

Within BR&T, Boeing’s Solid State Electronics Development organization (SSED) performs microelectronics technology development for aerospace systems.  SSED develops digital, analog, and RF Systems on Chip (SoCs) for radar, navigation, electronic warfare, communications, processing, and other electronic functions. These systems are used on Boeing marine, airborne, and satellite platforms. Designs are implemented with state-of-the-art semiconductor process technologies including CMOS, GaAs, GaN, and SiGe. SSED uses external wafer fabrication services but executes the whole design flow in-house (architecture definition, circuit design, RTL, synthesis, physical layout, verification, packaging and testing).  SSED owns numerous microelectronics projects, funded both by internal Boeing programs and external U.S. Government Science and Technology (S&T) customers. SSED’s large staff of microelectronics engineers conducts research and designs microelectronics hardware in support of these projects.

The successful candidate will initiate and improve cross-functional partnerships with others inside and outside Boeing to realize mutual benefit.  The successful candidate will help others understand the vision and values of the organization and translate them into actionable plans. Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist and support the senior SSED manager and MST director by executing organizational functions and facilitating portfolio growth

  • Manage employees and perform engineering and technical activities in the area of microelectronics research and development (R&D)

  • Manage, develop and motivate employees: set employee goals and objectives; evaluate performance to plan on a recurring basis; and provide a fair and equitable work environment

  • Provide oversight and approval of processes for employees

  • Forecast, obtain and manage personnel, facilities, IT, services, equipment and tools to meet project and organizational requirements and goals

  • Determine critical skills for the organization; develop and implement staffing and development plans to ensure necessary skills are available; ensure proper job classification of employees

  • Develop and execute integrated organizational plans, policies and procedures

  • Acquire resources for organizational activities, provide technical management of suppliers and lead process improvements

  • Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners and direct reports

  • Provide program and technical leadership for SSED programs and projects

  • Support SSED business development activities, including engagements with internal and external customers, creating technology transition opportunities, market shaping, proposal writing, and strengthening relationships with collaborators (e.g. other Boeing teams, universities, subcontractors, and suppliers)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication ability

This position is expected to be 100 onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Top Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership role (i.e., manager, project manager, team lead, etc.)

  • 3+ years of experience in engineering research and development

Preferred Qualifications(Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Active US Top Secret Clearance and/or TS/SCI Clearance

  • More than 8 years of engineering experience in microelectronics development

  • Experience with microelectronics test including lab operations especially in a cryogenic environment

  • Experience in people management

  • Experience capturing microelectronics R&D programs

  • Experience working on large-scale ASIC/SoC/RFIC/MMIC design and characterization/test teams

  • Experience with industry standard Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and methodologies for at least one of the following:

  • Digital ASIC/FPGA/SoC design and verification - e.g. Synopsys VCS, Design Compiler, ICC2, StarRC, PrimeTime, Tetramax, Formality; Cadence Genus, Innovus, Conformal, Joules, JasperGold; Mentor Graphics Questa, Tessent; Xilinx Vivado; Universal Verification Methodology (UVM); Matlab; Arm Socrates;

  • Analog/mixed-signal IC design and verification (e.g. Cadence Virtuoso & Spectre, Matlab, Mentor Calibre, Verilog-A)

  • RFIC/MMIC design and verification (e.g. Keysight ADS, NI MWO, and/or Cadence)

  • Experience with building organizational talent pipelines

  • Experience in risk management and technical readiness assessment

  • Engineering processes knowledge in agile product development

  • Experience supporting military radar, communications, electronic warfare, or avionics/mission processor programs
