Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) is looking for a Mid-Level, Senior, or Expert Flight Demonstrator Systems Engineer to join our Product Development Flight Demonstrators team based in Everett, Washington. The PD Flight Demonstrators portfolio includes the eco Demonstrator Program and other exciting technology flight demonstrator airplanes.

The successful candidate will have the following proficiencies: Technology: Experience in technology pipeline management, including a demonstrated history of developing technologies in more than one domain relevant to commercial air vehicles (e.g., aerostructures; air vehicle systems; propulsion, fuels, and propulsion systems; payloads; airline operations). Experience to include flight testing of prototypes and technologies that both were and were not implemented into sold products. Engineering: In addition to the Engineering fundamentals listed in the basic qualifications, additional experience in multi-disciplinary technical product development including test vehicle architecture, flight prototype development, testing, and technical issue diagnosis and resolution. Demonstrated use of multi-disciplinary engineering judgment, common sense in defining practical technical solutions, and communication skills -- leveraged together to speed product development and enhance design integrity. Prototype construction: experience in shipside engineering support while constructing flight prototypes, preferably including major and minor modification work on more than one transport-category flying test bed. Comfort with overcoming all technical, operational and logistical challenges in day-to-day prototype construction or modification management. Experience with technical project construction management, engineering troubleshooting and shipside construction liaison on both the test platform and the technologies. Previous experience building productive and warm relations with modification, maintenance, tooling, supplier management and shipside support teams. Testing: In addition to test safety requirements listed in the basic qualifications, additional experience in test program design, including being prime on test planning & execution for multiple research flight demonstrators. Testing experience includes lab and flight test experience, supporting test operations, troubleshooting test articles, and technology functionality.

Our teams are hiring for various experience levels, including Mid-Level, Senior, or Expert Level Systems Engineers.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Creating flight demonstrators: We learn by prototyping. In this role, you’ll create one or more flight demonstrators that test new technologies, systems, and architectures. You’ll specify the design of the test article that best meets our research goals, shepherd it through engineering, build and flight testing, and communicate the results of our work to the relevant design teams.
  • Solving engineering problems: We accelerate our prototyping by solving aerospace problems. Some problems we solve are practical, and some problems we solve are highly technical – the one thing they almost all have in common is that they are novel. Sometimes you’ll be solving problems on your own, sometimes you’ll be working with a team to solve problems, and sometimes you’ll be leading the teams to solve problems; comfort with working in a variety of roles day-to-day is a must. The problems you solve are high leverage, and your success will be immediately felt in the organization and by our teams.
  • Flight testing your work: A big element of our work is flight testing. You’ll manage our safe to fly practices for your aircraft. Equally important is supporting lab testing of our prototypes as well – ensuring our designs are mature when we fly. When there are issues with the airplane or a test rig, you’ll often be the first design engineering point of contact the test team looks to in resolving the problems.
  • Communicating our results: We talk to others in our organization as one way to turn our successful prototypes into reality, so communication with a variety of internal groups is very important. In addition, some of our projects are public and very high visibility. This role will require communicating with a variety of stakeholders, including senior and C-level leaders inside and outside the company, and occasionally to the general public.
