The Staff Software Certification Engineer will lead the software certification efforts for aircraft certification planning as well as regulatory compliance oversight for assigned projects and products for all of Aviation Systems. Our Systems business comprises a wide cross section of aviation products which includes power generation, power distribution, navigation, cockpit displays, computing and networking, ignition systems, sensors, and propellers. We support civil and military customers worldwide and are leading the way in hybrid-electric aircraft technologies and open platform solutions. In this role, you will utilize your experience and expertise to achieve regulatory compliant solutions for products and systems. The Staff Software Certification Engineer will also be responsible for mentoring software certification personnel and will be instrumental in the generation and rollout of certification processes.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead programs in determining product certification strategy and certification basis
  • Lead compliance planning and determination of means of compliance
  • Interpret aircraft regulatory material and determine project impact
  • Audit project / product artifacts and verification activities to assess compliance with the certification basis
  • Champion minimum effort solutions for meeting civil compliance
  • Assess changes to approved/certified products to determine minor or major classification
  • Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project
  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Generate and execute mentoring plans for junior Certification Engineers

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
  • Minimum of 10 years of software development experience in a RTCA/DO-178B or C environment
  • Minimum of 5 years of software certification experience (finding compliance) on civil aerospace programs

Eligibility Requirements

  • This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology.  GE will require proof of status prior to employment
  • Must be willing to travel ~10 (domestic/international depending on the project)
  • Must be willing to work out of our GE offices located in Grand Rapids, MI or Dayton, OH

Desired Characteristics:

  • Understanding of the aircraft systems engineering and civil certification lifecycles
  • Familiarity with major aircraft subsystems, particularly Avionics and associated regulations
  • Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
  • Extensive experience in finding compliance to the objectives of DO-178B/C
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Direct DER and/or ODA unit member experience

The salary range for this position is 131,600.00 -219,400.00 USD Annual. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus/variable incentive plan.
