Job Summary:

Cirrus Aircraft is currently hiring an Electrical or Mechanical Systems Safety Engineer. Engineers in this role are responsible for performing system safety assessments (SSAs) of airplane systems to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of 14 CFR 23.1309 and FAA AC 23.1309-1E.

Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Preparation and execution of program compliance plans.
  • Develop and update System Hazard Analyses and Safety Assessment Reports
  • Preparation of reliability and safety requirements for vendors system and component requirements documents.
  • Prepare presentations and participate in Design Reviews and Test Readiness Reviews.
  • Perform reliability and safety trade studies for alternative design concepts.
  • Perform reliability analysis of electrical and/or mechanical assemblies using RIAC NPRD-2011, NSWC-11, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
  • Perform reliability analysis of electrical assemblies using MIL-HDBK-217-F2, RIAC NPRD-2011, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
  • Perform Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) of electrical and/or mechanical assemblies per MIL-STD-1629A, SAE ARP4761, RIAC FMD-2013, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
  • Review vendors reliability analysis and FMECA submittals for completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and common cause analyses (CCAs) of electrical and/or mechanical systems per SAE ARP4761.
  • Development of tasks and procedures for flight crew and periodic maintenance requirements necessary for ensuring compliance with 23.1309.
  • Support development of periodic maintenance requirements for electrical and/or mechanical systems for compliance with 23.1529.
  • Support design decisions related to testability, human factors, etc.
  • Support investigations of in-service reliability and/or safety issues.

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering
  • 0-3 years of experience in Systems Safety Analysis

Distinguishing Education and/or Experience:

  • Experience as a FAA DER/ODA unit member with systems and equipment safety analysis approval delegation.
  • General familiarity with statistical analysis methods and distributions (Exponential, Weibull, Chi-Square, etc.).
  • General familiarity with aircraft aerodynamics and controllability.
  • General familiarity with software and complex electronic hardware certification per RTCA/DO-178 and RTCA/DO-254 or equivalent desirable.
  • General familiarity with equipment environmental qualification testing per RTCA/DO-160 or equivalent desirable.
  • General familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE) desirable.
  • General familiarity with Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT), Reliability Growth Testing (RGT), and Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) desirable.
  • Experience with FAR Part 23 and/or Part 25, Part 27, or Part 29 system design and/or safety certification of electrical and/or mechanical systems
  • Masters degree in Engineering or Physics.

Demonstrated Proficiencies/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to read, write and speak the English language
  • Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner
  • Ability to work both independently and within a cross-functional team
  • Ability to efficiently learn new skills and manage multiple tasks
  • Experienced in use of lab equipment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio)
  • Performing cost and weight studies for alternative design concepts
