This position inspects, tests, checks, repairs, and repacks parachutes, parachute components and subassemblies; seat survival kits and their components; personal flotation devices and components; oxygen regulators, and ALSS equipment. Employ a working knowledge of aircrew survival equipment and applicable explosive devices.

Principal Responsibilities and Accountabilities:



  • Possess knowledge of maintenance practices, applicable maintenance/technical manuals and publications, basic tools, special tools, test equipment, operation, and maintenance of aircrew survival equipment. Must have working knowledge of corrosion detection, prevention, and treatment.
  • Work from Government Instructions, Maintenance Instruction Manuals, and Company Directives to perform maintenance, repair, and installation of aircraft life support systems and aircrew personal survival equipment.
  • May be required to perform Collateral Duty Quality Control Inspections (CDI/CDQAR).
  • Perform duties of Aviators Breathing Oxygen (ABO) Analyst when authorized and designated.
  • Install and remove Cartridge Actuated Devices and Pyrotechnic Devices.
  • Responsible for the incorporation and completion of requirements as listed in the NA 13-1-6 series manuals, and Air Force T.O. series manuals.
  • Perform corrosion control and prevention as required.
  • Responsible for adhering to all applicable Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention and Tool Control rules and regulations including participation in FOD walk downs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the work center and around your assigned area.
  • Must have all required personal tools and box established within 30 days of hire or job assignment.
  • Issues and receives aircrew related survival equipment from ALSS pool/assets.
  • Assemble, place-in-service, and perform calendar inspections on parachute assemblies, life rafts, life preservers, oxygen regulators, and other related safety/ALSS survival equipment.
  • Maintain appropriate database for parachute and personal equipment for accountability and inspection due dates (OOMA).
  • Perform periodic maintenance and perform repairs on sewing machines.
  • Construct fabric items using sewing machine and performs hand tacking on fabrics.
  • Remove, install, and repair slide fasteners, grommets, snap fasteners, and hook and pile closures on personal survival equipment and other type fabrics.
  • Order survival equipment and supplies.
  • Must pass an ordnance physical within 30 days and become qualified and certified in Explosive Handling Personnel Qualification and Certification Program in accordance with OPNAVINST 8023.24 Series within 90 days of date of hire or assignment of position.
  • Coordinate with Lead/Supervisor/Quality Assurance to resolve questions concerning serviceability and/or on repair procedures.
  • May be required to assist other mechanics within the work center/division in the performance of their duties, (i.e. during periods of increased workload).
  • Familiarization with COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series and other applicable Navy Instructions, Maintenance Instructions, Maintenance Manuals, Illustrated Parts Breakdown, Technical Directives, Manufacture Manuals, and Company Instructions.
  • Document all work accomplished and maintain maintenance records IAW COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series and other applicable instructions.
  • Brief student flight personnel on the use and sizing of aircrew flight gear.
  • Performs other reasonable related incidental duties as required.
  • Comply with established Hazardous Material/Waste Programs and Local, State, and Federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
  • May be required to perform duties of SAA Accumulation/Point Source Coordinator when authorized and designated.
  • May be required to wear a respirator while performing assigned duties.
  • May be required to operate a forklift.
  • May be required to perform off-site services.
  • Know location of safety data sheet (SDS) and applicable safety precautions.
  • May be required to perform scheduled/unscheduled inventories.
  • Maintains the highest ethical personal and professional standards.
  • Other projects and initiatives as assigned.


Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:



  • This classification activity is usually accomplished in aircraft maintenance and as such requires the scope of physical movements and postures normally associated with these activities. Special vision abilities required to perform this job are close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.
  • May be required to lift objects whose weight normally will not exceed 50 pounds.
  • The diversity of work conditions may range from an environment where there is little or no physical discomfort, to an environment where inclement weather may subject individual to changes in temperature and weather.
  • May be required to work in areas where high noise hazards prevail. May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • May be exposed to electrical shock hazards.

Qualifications, and Desired Competencies:



  • Satisfactory completion of Navy PR “A” school or equivalent service school.
  • Intermediate level experience as an Aircrew Survival Equipment Mechanic is preferred.
  • Secret Clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • Must have a valid State Driver's License.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CAC Card.
  • Certifications/Licensing as required by the Program Training and Certification Manual.
  • Certifications/Licensing as required by the COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series.
  • Must be able to pass periodic medical surveillance evaluations which may include respirator fit testing when required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be able to work weekends, other shifts and overtime as required.
