To continue our standard of excellence, Piedmont is seeking a motivated, reliable leader to join our team as a Director, Ground Safety in our Safety Department. The primary responsibility of the position is leading the ground safety team and mentoring ground handling management to ensure and enhance compliance with safety and security procedures. The Director, Ground Safety should possess extensive operational experience and professional qualifications in aviation. The successful candidate will also possess regional airline experience, specifically ten years of ramp and gate management. This position will report to the Vice President, Safety and Regulatory Compliance. 

Essential Duties:

  • Act as liaison between the Safety and Ground Handling Departments

  • Actively support the company’s Safety Management System (SMS) (14 CFR 5)

  • Develop and initiate innovative ways to increase the level of safety and security throughout the ground handling organization

  • Thoroughly manage the ground damage investigation and safety assurance process at all ground handling locations

  • Develop and initiate innovative ways to increase the level of safety and security throughout the company organization

  • Assign projects, tasks, follow-up to Senior Manager(s), Ground Safety, Ground Safety Manager(s), and Occupation Health Programs Manager, based on department need and trends regarding regulatory non-compliance to include Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), environmental, security, ground damage, and on-the-job (OJI) data

  • Program management of the ground handling employee injury and ground damage prevention programs

  • Develop and monitor programs designed for ground handling leadership on the application of safety procedures and ground damage prevention programs

  • Oversee employee OJI investigations, root cause identification, trend analysis, and reduction programs

  • Oversee and manage the Occupational Health, Respirator, and Hearing Conservation Programs

  • Assist in the development and monitoring of local corrective action plans in response to company and regulatory agency findings, to include composing responses to reporting agencies

  • Be a liaison between the company, other ground handling providers, regulatory agencies, and other airlines

  • Develop and champion effective safety committees for the system and individual locations

  • Manage Ground Safety Reports (GSR) investigations and follow-up actions

  • Support hub and key city safety recognition programs

  • Conduct safety evaluations, audits, and inspections

  • Develop and manage relevant budget

  • Actively participate in Eagle Ground Operations Manual (EGOM) and Eagle Ground Deice Manual (EGDIM) stakeholder activities

Job Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Experience within an airline safety department managing people and programs

  • Knowledge of Safety Management Systems and Security Management Systems (14 CFR 5)

  • Regional airline experience

  • Ten (10) years of ramp and gate management experience

  • Thorough knowledge of relevant government regulations to include OSHA, Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing innovative incident prevention and safety recognition programs

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to defuse difficult situations and manage personnel related issues

  • A team player possessing the ability to work independently and excellent communication skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and desire to learn new automation tools

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of an FAA Certificate, another similar aviation credentials, or a relevant undergraduate/graduate degree/course work

  • Three (3) years of civilian or military aviation experience in flight, technical operations, maintenance, ramp operations, or a combination of all

  • Previous airline auditing or safety/security investigation experience

  • Academic safety education or training

Work Environment:

  • Standard office environment, use of telephones, computers, and other office equipment

  • Some travel may be required

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
