Boeing is seeking an upbeat, highly motivated, and dedicated Intellectual Property (IP) Professional to join its Boeing Intellectual Property (BIP) department in Hazelwood, MO. Our team is open to a broad range of experience levels; including Experienced and Senior Levels to find the best fit for this position.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced IP Professional who is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (patent attorneys or patent agents) or an experienced engineer/technical specialist with some experience with IP who aspires to become a patent agent registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

This position requires a candidate who has broad technical knowledge.  This position also requires that the candidate be able to raise awareness of IP, provide training and instruction to clients on IP and Boeing’s processes related thereto, actively harvest IP, review and evaluate IP submissions (e.g., conduct prior art searches for patentability, analyze patents and scientific papers), oversee outside counsel in patent preparation and prosecution, engage in patent portfolio management, and support IP strategy through various initiatives.  Prior experience with preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the U.S. and abroad is preferred.

The successful candidate will be internal client-facing to our Hazelwood clients, provide IP strategy aligned to each client’s business objectives, and provide oversight to outside counsel as necessary.

This position reports to the Director and Senior Counsel of Military and Space responsible for patents in Boeing Intellectual Property.  


Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide in-person IP support to internal clients in Hazelwood, MO. relating to satellites, advanced military products, software technologies, and electrical engineering technologies

  • Develop and manage IP portfolios (patents and trade secrets) around client products and technologies in support of the client’s business strategy, including invention harvesting, and managing outside counsel for both US and foreign patent prosecution

This position is hybrid. On-site work will be at a minimum of 3 days per week. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.  This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required.  “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelors degree or higher in engineering or any technical field

  • Experience in Intellectual Property (IP) policies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 5 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in chemistry, material science or mechanical engineering

  • Registration to practice before the USPTO (patent agent or patent attorney)

  • Juris Doctorate degree preferred for this non-attorney position

  • 5+ years of IP experience, including reviewing invention submissions, prosecuting patent applications, developing patent portfolios, creating patent strategies, competitive IP analysis, and IP conversations with outside counsel, inventors, and business leaders

  • Communication, organization, and interpersonal skills

  • Business judgment and critical thinking

Typical Education & Experience:
Experienced (Level 3)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years related work experience, 9 years related work experience, etc.)

Senior (Level 4)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years related work experience, Master+7 years related work experience, 13 years related work experience, etc.)

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary pay range (level 3): $110,500-$149,500

Summary pay range (level 4): $131,750-$178,250
