Job SummaryThe main role of the Information Developer is to design, produce, and distribute NAV CANADA’s technical and operational training publications used nationwide. Specific knowledge required for this position includes information architecture, project management, and facilitation services.

Quality assurance is integral to this position and the primary requirement is to ensure that Operational Training publications adhere to standards and regulations defined by NAV CANADA, Transport Canada, and ICAO, and that safety is ensured at all times.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Design and develop technical information products using a standardized approach to information development (requirements, analysis, design, development, QA, production, maintenance) while ensuring that all information is clear and concise, easily retrieved, and technically accurate.
  • Consult with, and provide recommendations to, operational personnel, specialists, subject-matter experts, management, and other stakeholders to ensure that requirements are satisfied, and that content complies with industry-standard conventions and best practices.
  • Work on scripting/programming languages including HTML, XML, JavaScript, DAX, and VBA to create and maintain web-based tools.
  • Conduct user needs analysis, write, edit, and perform quality control of content to ensure effective information products.
  • Define standards, rules, and author guidelines to produce consistent, repeatable, and easy-to-maintain information products; provide recommendations to improve usability and presentation.
  • Use recognized project management practices to set schedules, define objectives and resources, prepare project plans, track and manage progress, and deliver on time. This ensures consistency, quality, and user acceptance.
  • Ensure robust content reuse to reduce production time and costs. When appropriate, create a single, definitive source for output to multiple media and disciplines.
  • Investigate new communication tools and methods for designing, developing, and delivering state-of-the-art information products to make NAV CANADA a world leader in information delivery.
  • Help develop, demonstrate, and support tools and processes for peers to improve communications and enhance collaboration.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Graduation with a degree from a recognized degree program with specialization in a related field of study. Specialization may be obtained through a combination of education, training, or experience.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in information development indicating comprehensive expertise in the field of technical communication.
  • Training or experience in the visual design of technical information indicating extensive knowledge of, and ability to apply user interface philosophy and typographic design.
  • Experience analyzing user needs and developing information products.
  • Training or experience in information architecture indicating knowledge of information design concepts, problem solving models, etc.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and understanding of theories, principles, and practices associated with communications, including writing, editing, publishing, multi-media product planning, development, evaluation, and quality control.
  • Knowledge and understanding of IM/IT methods, including website design, development, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge and understanding of research and data analysis methods/techniques, and of project planning techniques.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the company policies, standards, and guidelines governing the development and publication of NAV CANADA information products.

Abilities:

  • Excellent writing skills including grammar, spelling, and composition.
  • Strong research skills including gathering and organizing information from multiple sources, designing surveys, and compiling the results.
  • Ability to recognize patterns, organize ideas, and visualize end products.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, work under minimal supervision, work in a team and individual setting, and handle multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Ability to establish rapport and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.
