Boeing Commercial Airplanes is seeking a Tool Grinder & Induction Heater A located in Portland, OR!

Tool grind operators setup, operate and adjust numerous types of conventional or Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) grinding equipment, utilizing drawings, sketches, specification documents, pre-planned control media and/or program documents to fabricate, inspect, refurbish, alter and/or sharpen tools (e.g., end mills, cutters, reamers).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Setup, operate and adjust various conventional or CNC grinding equipment utilizing drawings, sketches, specs to fabricate, refurbish, alter, sharpen and inspect tools (end mills, reamers, drills, hobs, etc.).

  • Assignment is determined by schedule, priority tag, or team leader/lead/supervisor.

  • Obtain appropriate tool drawings, specifications and/or sketches.

  • Ensure correct grinding wheels, set-up tools, or fixtures are available for use and are free from defects.

  • Perform setup or run previously setup job by reviewing work order, tie-in sheets, operators or setup documents, drawings, and sketches.

  • Check setup and/or cutters completed by previous operator to determine progress and ensure safe working conditions.

  • Select machine accessories and holding devises.

  • Verify apparatus is in good condition. Attach machine accessories, tools, fixtures, shop aids, gears using dial indicators, dividing head, wrenches, bolts, clamps and lifting devices.

  • Download CNC programs to machine using computing equipment.

  • Select, form and check cutting tools or grinding wheels per drawings, specifications, sketches, program or CNC documents.

  • Ensure cutters or grinding wheels are the correct type, width, diameter, radius and are in good condition.

  • Load and unload grinding wheels following machine or program information or set-up documents, using tool holders, wheel hubs, spindle tapers, hand tools.

  • Dress wheels and re-qualify.

  • Load and install cutting tools to be manufactured, altered or sharpened.

  • Set machine coordinates or index points per conventional or CNC documents, including cutter offset/compensations, tool heights and probes, using controller keyboard, digital readout, height blocks and shims.

  • Run CNC programs to grind precision cutting tools following NC documents.

  • Calculate formulas and enter values to ensure correct CNC programming to fabricate or regrind tools.

  • Adjust machine settings to correct problems or prepare for next operation including head, spindle, or wheel angles.

  • Perform editing of CNC programs.

  • Monitor machine for unusual vibration or sounds, watch machine gauges and controller display for warnings.

  • Visually check wheel path and clearance to ensure smooth operation.

  • Perform hand honing, edge preparation, deburr & other bench work.

  • Check work after completion of operation or job to ensure tool features are per drawing, specs, or sketches & are defect free.

  • Handle and protect components & assemblies in accordance with shop procedures & drawing requirements.

  • Use precision optical & physical measuring instruments (e.g., optical comparator, optical analyzer, bevel protractor) to verify correct cutting tool geometry.

  • Etch or engrave part numbers on cutting tools.

  • Handle & dispose of hazardous materials (e.g., coolants, solvents) in approved manner per MSDS using PPE as required.

This position is expected to be 100 onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • 1&43; years of experience utilizing and following detailed work instructions, reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications.

  • 1&43; years of experience utilizing software applications for internet navigation, email, Microsoft Suite and/or other specialized computer applications.

  • 1&43; years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • 1&43; years’ experience Machining

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • High school graduate or GED preferred.

  • Tool Grind / Machining Apprenticeship Program preferred

Relocation:

This position is located in a location that does not offer relocation.  Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

Shift:

This is a 2nd shift position.

Summary pay range: $29.50/hour - $36.22/hour
