- Lay out of sheet metal parts using blueprints, drawings, written or verbal instructions.
- Alter and existing part using blueprints, drawings, written or verbal instructions.
- Rivet and sheet metal component removal.
- Bend and form a radius on fabricated sheet metal parts.
- Drill various metals.
- Debur holes and cut lines.
- Set up for and countersinking holes.
- Set up for and dimpling holes.
- Set up for and install solid rivets with a rivet gun.
- Set up for and install solid rivets with a squeeze tool.
- Install blind rivets and fasteners.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of aircraft structure repair manuals.
- Knowledge of FAA AC 43.13-1B.
- Skilled in identifying types of corrosions.
- Skilled in corrosion removal procedures.
- Skilled in the application and removal of wash etch and alodine material..
- Skilled in the application of primer.
- Ability to identify rivets, bolts, screws, and nuts and washers.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 4-6 years of experience.
Physical Requirements:
Sheet metal techs often do a considerable amount of bending, lifting, standing, climbing, and squatting and occasionally must work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions:
Sheet metal workers usually work in hangars or in shops that are well lighted and well-ventilated. However, they stand for long periods and lift heavy materials and finished pieces. Sheet metal workers must follow safety practices because working around high-speed machines can be dangerous. They are also subject to cuts from sharp metal, burns form soldering and welding, and falls from ladders and scaffolds. They are often required to wear safety glasses and must not wear jewelry or loose-fitting clothing that could easily be caught in machines.
