Job Description:
We are looking for a Lead System and Software Safety Engineer to join Thales in Overland Park, KS. The Lead System and Software Safety Engineer will be the Subject Matter Expert for system safety and compliance to software assurance requirements taking on the responsibility of independently verifying and validating Safety and Software assurance engineering activities in projects, products and bids and ultimately to ensure that NAS delivered systems as a whole are within their acceptable level of safety.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Interface across disciplines providing ownership of system and software safety
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) providing guidance on the application of appropriate methodologies and standards for system and software safety for ground systems
  • Applicable standards include: DO-278A, ED-109A, ED-153, MIL-STD-882
  • Experience with similar airborne standards can act as an alternative: ARP 4761, DO-178B, DO-178C
  • Lead improvement initiatives to the current Safety Management System
  • Solicit and coordinate, audits of Project Safety activities
  • Represent system and software safety in Research and Technology (R&T) activities
  • Contribute to the definition of the system and software safety strategic activities
  • Maintain a system and software safety focused organization
  • Define required skills & expertise
  • Maintain required skills & expertise via regular communications and training
  • Champion system and software safety across projects/products and bids
  • Support the full system lifecycle from bids through product support
  • Provide effort estimates for implementing required system and software safety aspects in support of bids
  • Verify appropriate system and software safety baselines are defined, accounted for, and in line with the business line’s strategy
  • Own safety related documents such as the safety management plan and Plan for SW aspect of Approval (PSAA) as well as the safety related aspects of other systems/software documents (e.g. SW Accomplishment Summary [SAS])
  • Manage project safety risks
  • Ensure that the safety requirements are properly derived and implemented in the product/system (specification and architecture) and safety objectives are met
  • Work in a true multi-cultural context in a geographically diverse industrial footprint in several countries
  • Adapt to a large portfolio of international customers with different and unique cultural sensitivities
Job Requirements:
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) or Air Traffic Management Sciences
  • 5 years or more experience managing Safety programs in the Air Traffic Management (ATM) environment (or technical equivalent)
  • Prior experience evaluating Safety Regulation and Safety Projects requirements while assessing the adequacy of a proposed Safety Solution
  • Mastery of Safety & Software Regulation standards:
  • Applicable standards include: DO-278A, ED-109A, ED-153, MIL-STD-882
  • Experience with similar airborne standards can act as an alternative: ARP 4761, DO-178B, DO-178C
  • Working knowledge of system safety tools and techniques
  • e.g. Fault Tree Analyses, Event Tree Analysis, Goal Structured Notation, HAZOP
  • Proven capability to work in a multi-cultural environment and with variety of international customers
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to present technical information (verbally or written) to colleagues
  • Solid knowledge in the Air traffic management (ATM) domain and a good understanding of the underlying technologies
Must be a US person as defined by applicable law.
 
The position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software technology or technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR) [And] the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible, or able to obtain authorization, for such access.
 
Occasional European and US travel will be require
 
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Master’s of Science or Engineering degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Airport Management or comparable
  • Experience in preparing for and presenting in Safety and Software audits (e.g. with the FAA)
  • Ability to speak additional languages such as German, Italian or French is a benefit
  • Knowledge of Software / Hardware assurance standards DO-254
  • Experience with Thales tools and processes
  • Experience with DOD, EASA and/or FAA Programs
