The incumbent is expected to work closely with the methods engineers, toolroom employees and supervisors where the items designed are made and used. The incumbents effectiveness is measured by the amount of changes required and trouble experienced in building the item; the comments of the toolmaker, inspector, and user; and the ability of the item to perform its function.

A knowledge in gear manufacturing and mechanical actuation is desirable.
As a result of the incumbent's duties and contacts, one should have the ability to get along with many people. It is also expected that in performing this job, one will make recommendations for improvement on part drawings and manufacturing techniques.
