Job Description:
Oversees and manages the day to day operations. Responsible for strategic, tactical and personnel issues for Aircraft Fire and Rescue program in support of an airfield for rotary and fixed wing aircraft. Develops procedures, ensures training is conducted, and ensures all personnel have met requirements dictated by their job description. Review of all unit activities and records and advises the chief of regulations that personnel need to meet to maintain currency in their profession. Ensures Operations are conducted within requirements of DoD/NFPA/ICAO requirements for Emergency Services delivery.
A. Duties/responsibilities:

1. Is responsible for Fire Department Operations at assigned duty location.

2. Oversees and is in overall charge of operational shifts.

3. Serves as an instructor and mentor to MNG Firefighters assigned to the department.

4. Develops operations guidelines and SOGs; coordinates operational guidelines and SOGs with the fire chief.

5. Oversees the firefighter personnel in the readiness of personnel to respond to emergency situations at duty location.

6. Ensures the fire department responds to all requests for emergency services (fire, EMS, special rescue).

7. Ensures the fire department performs and participates in the proper mitigation of emergency services.

8. Supervises personnel during emergency operations and non-emergency operations via the chain of command system.

9. Prioritize support requirements to handle multiple simultaneous medical and fire emergencies.

10. Maintain adequate resources and ensure they are maintained in proper operation and in a mission ready state at all times.

11. Maintain files and records on equipment used in all aspects of the operations of the fire department.

12. Participate in weekly meetings with the fire chief and officers.

13. Participate in weekly all hands fire department meetings with the fire chief.

14. Create and maintain weekly and monthly reports in support of training activities.

15. Ensures internal training events and customer training events are conducted under the direction of the fire chief.

16. Maintains liaison with other DAT fire department services.

17. Ability to effectively communicate with the customer in a professional and courteous manner.

18. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.

19. As part of the selection process, a physical will be conducted. Candidates must have normal color discrimination, visual acuity correctable to 20/20 in one eye, 20/30 in the other eye and not more than 20/200, each eye, uncorrected. Candidates must not have any record of pyro phobia, acrophobia or claustrophobia. Must have and maintain a BMI of 35 or less.

20. All other duties as assigned by the chief of the fire department.


B. Independence: Reports to the fire chief of Aviation. Works within the rules and regulations of airfield flight operations and safety guidelines and applicable firefighting and emergency services guidelines. Has the authority to select and implement goals and objectives within the execution of duties and responsibilities of the fire department under the direction of the fire chief.


C. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises operational shifts and shift Lieutenants. Perform Role of Fire Chief in his absence.

Job Requirements:

A. Education Level:

1. High School graduate required; associates degree or higher preferred.

2. Department of Defense, Pro Board, or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress certification required.

b. Hazmat Incident Commander

c. Hazmat Operations

d. ARFF Firefighter

e. Fire Inspector II

f. Fire Instructor II

g. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) – Emergency Medical Technician Certification issued by a State Agency or the National Registry Required.


B. Experience:

1. Minimum of 10-years ARFF firefighting experience in either the U.S. Military, DOD or as a civilian required.


C. Specific knowledge, skill, and ability requirements:

1. Expert knowledge of aircraft rescue and firefighting techniques, practices and equipment, as well as first aid and CPR and structural firefighting.

2. Considerable knowledge of the design and characteristics of military and civilian rotary wing aircraft.

3. Considerable knowledge of exit and safety procedures of various military and civilian rotary wing aircraft, and structural fire/alarm detection/suppression systems.

4. Ability to quickly perform and direct all functions in difficult and hazardous situations, without hesitation.

5. Ability to comprehend and apply instructions and communicate information in a clear and concise manner.

6. Ability to learn, apply and teach aircraft rescue and firefighting techniques and practices.

7. Ability to lead in potentially dangerous situations and make quick and sound decisions.

8. Ability to perform physically demanding work and withstand very hazardous conditions.

9. Skill in the operation of aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment, tools and vehicles, including highly specialized firefighting apparatus.

10. Possesses a valid Class B driver’s license.
