Assistant Manager - Front of House
Job Description:

NOW HIRING! The Flying Otter Grill is one of Victoria’s most recognizable waterfront destinations - known for great food, a strong team culture, and a setting that never gets old. As Assistant Manager, Front of House, you’ll be a pillar of our guest experience: keeping the floor running smoothly, developing our people, and making sure every shift reflects the standard we hold ourselves to.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership seriously, and knows how to get the best out of a team. You’ll work closely with the General Manager to oversee day-to-day FOH operations, contribute to planning and continuous improvement, and step in as the senior leader on shift when needed.

This is a Full Time Regular Position.

Benefits: Extended medical and dental, flight perks (including buddy passes and global inter-airline partnerships), discounts at local restaurants and partner organizations, staff events and much more!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and Team Development

  • Lead, motivate, and support FOH staff on every shift - setting the tone and holding the standard
  • Onboard new team members and deliver ongoing training to develop skill and confidence
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide regular coaching and constructive feedback
  • Address disciplinary matters fairly and consistently, in partnership with People & Culture
  • Act as a primary point of contact for employee concerns, escalating to P&C as appropriate

Operations

  • Oversee daily FOH operations to ensure efficiency, quality, and consistency
  • Monitor and maintain guest service standards, stepping in to resolve issues as they arise
  • Manage staff scheduling, balancing operational needs with team capacity - including seasonal and tourism-driven fluctuations
  • Coordinate effectively with the kitchen and bar to ensure seamless service flow
  • Manage inventory and support cost control in line with budgetary targets
  • Identify operational gaps and lead or support improvements where needed

Compliance and Administration

  • Always ensure full compliance with BC food safety regulations and health code requirements
  • Oversee responsible alcohol service and confirm all FOH staff hold a valid Serving It Right certification
  • Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with WorkSafeBC regulations
  • Complete daily cash-outs and verify/approve timesheets throughout the week
  • Support large-party bookings, event reservations, and special service requirements
  • Manage menu printing and coordinate updates with the GM as needed
  • Assist with budget tracking, financial reporting, and other administrative tasks as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Minimum 2 years in a supervisory or management role within the food & beverage or hospitality industry
  • Demonstrated experience with staff scheduling, performance management, and team development
  • Strong leadership presence - you can motivate a team and hold a standard without micromanaging
  • Solid understanding of FOH operations, service standards, and best practices
  • Familiarity with BC food safety and liquor service regulations
  • Valid Serving It Right certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start)
  • Clear, direct communicator with staff, management, and guests alike
  • Calm under pressure and effective at prioritizing when things get busy
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with a track record of following through
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook and Excel; comfortable with POS and scheduling systems
  • A genuine team player who leads by example
