Pilot in Command – Duties and Responsibilities
- The pilot in command of the aircraft is at all times directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the safe operation of that aircraft. Prior to flight, each pilot in command is responsible for familiarizing themselves with all available information concerning that flight, including current inspection status and aircraft maintenance release, if appropriate. Specific duties are as follows:
- Determines that any required personnel are briefed / trained, adequately rested and in proper dress.
- Plans flight assignments and obtains briefing information regarding purpose of the flight, weather, operating procedures and special instructions.
- Prepares or supervises preparation of flight plan considering such factors as altitude, terrain, weather, range, weight, cruise control data, airport facilities and navigational aides.
- Ensures aircraft is pre-flighted, inspected, loaded, equipped and manned for the flight assignment.
- Pre-flights the aircraft in accordance with the RFM.
- Supervises loading and distribution of cargo and passengers and determines that weight and balance is within prescribed limitations per appropriate sample loading schedules, load computer or applicable information and graphs contained in the Aircraft Flight Manual.
- Ensures cargo is properly secured and provisions for passengers’ comfort and emergency equipment such as life rafts, life vests, etc., are aboard.
- Files flight plan with the flight service station or Company.
- Operates helicopter at a favorable altitude taking into account safety, turbulence and comfort of passengers during flight.
- Insures preparation of flight logs, records and maintenance forms.
- Other instructions/duties as assigned.
- Fulfill any directives assigned by your supervisors.
- Perform your work in a collegial and professional manner. The pilot in command is ultimately responsible for the safety of his passengers. He/she shall, before the loading of passengers, assign emergency evacuation duties.
- Must be highly knowledgeable of the Company Operations Manual, FAA regulations, operations specifications, flight manuals, etc.
- Must have the following experience or equivalent:
- Minimum 3500 flight hours as helicopter PIC
- Experience in one of the following aircraft:
- H145 / H125 / Bell 407
- Preferred Experience:
- 200 hours NVG
- 200 hours VRLL
- Part 91,135,133 experience
