Job Summary/Basic Function
Serve as a direct report to the Department of Aerospace Chair with overall management and leadership responsibility of the MTSU Airport Operations. This includes oversight of a Part 141 flight school operation and maintenance, facilities and aircraft maintenance, flight dispatch functions, and the flight operations budget. Supervising, coordinating, and supporting all activities between areas and personnel involved with MTSU airport operations. Provide direct supervision to the Flight Training Managers, Aircraft Maintenance Manager, Coordinators of Flight Dispatch, Airport Facilities Manager, Student Engagement Team, and other airport administrative staff to ensure safe and efficient operations. Coordinate Flight School operations with the academic mission of the Aerospace Department through the development and implementation of operations policies, procedures, and benchmarks. Serve on the Safety Committee and support the Director of Aerospace Safety to ensure compliance with the safety program policies and procedures. Assist with strategic planning in the development of projects and alignment of budget with priorities. Work in conjunction with Aerospace faculty for effective development of department initiatives involving airport operations. Liaise with other constituencies as required, including students, parents, government agencies, airport authorities, and other organizations associated with MTSU Department of Aerospace airport operations.
Job Requirements:
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management or related aviation field (i.e. aviation safety, aviation maintenance, professional pilot). Master’s preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a non-aviation field with an aviation military background and/or strong background in aviation operations, safety, or flight training may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor's degree in the Aviation field.
Required Related Experience
  • Five (5) years progressively responsible experience in the aerospace industry or military aviation/aerospace, including three years of management and supervisory experience within aerospace operations (flight operations or training preferred).
Required License/Registration/Certification
FAA certification in one or more of the following areas:
  • FAA commercial pilot certificate (CFI or ATP certificate preferred)
  • FAA Airframe & Powerplant certificate
  • FAA Flight Dispatch certificate
  • FAA Flight Attendant Certificate
Desirable Related Experience
  • Five (5) years of management and leadership experience in collegiate flight training operations preferred
  • Experience as an Assistant Chief Instructor or Chief Instructor of a FAA Part 141 program
  • Experience managing flight training operations
Desirable License/Registration/Certification
  • Certified Flight Instructor or Airline Transport Pilot certificate or A&P Mechanic with Inspector Authorization preferred
