Job Description SummaryAs a Metallography and Microanalysis Specialist in the Microscopy area within the Materials Characterization organization, you will work with an energized team of scientists to prepare metallographic samples (cutting, polishing, etching), execute image analysis routines (using cameras, optical or electron microscopes), process data, interact with customers and generate reports using image analysis techniques supporting the development of materials and processes at GE.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Prepare high quality metallographic mounts of various sizes, shapes and materials through cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching.

  • Examine specimens, acquire images, and large mosaics using an inverted light microscope to analyze microstructures.

  • Apply chemical etchants to select mounts to highlight certain features for evaluation.

  • Multitask and reprioritize in a high-demand environment.

  • Work independently and as an integral part of the team. 

  • Deliver high quality analytical results with outstanding attention to detail.

  • Interact with customers to understand specific project needs and timelines.

  • Collaborate and effectively communicate with GE researchers and GE businesses to provide written reports and verbal presentations describing methods, analytical data, and observations.

  • Grow expertise in metallography, imaging, and image analysis processing.

  • Collaborate with the larger team of experts using other characterization techniques to provide solutions for GE businesses and customers.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment.

  • Generate new ideas for developing programs that apply analytical methodologies to meet business needs.

  • Help GE businesses establish standard lab operating procedures when called upon.

  • Must be able to stand for 8 hours per day.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical Technology, Chemistry or a related field OR an Associates degree in Material Science, Mechanical technology, Chemistry or a related field with a minimum of 1 year of research experience.

  • Strong knowledge of metallographic techniques and principles.

  • Familiarity with sample preparation methods and metallographic equipment.

  • Demonstrated skill using laboratory instrumentation.

  • Proficiency or willingness to learn and develop specialty metallography preparation methods.

  • Ability to multi-task, reprioritize, and deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

  • Outstanding attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent work ethic, enthusiasm for working on a team, and self-motivation.

  • Ability to work in an environment where tasks are repetitive.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

The base pay range for this position is 60,000 - 110,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary. This posting is expected to close on April 16, 2024
