Job Description SummaryGE Aerospace has an exciting opportunity for a Avionics Principal Investigator to identify, research, and develop technologies used to create MEMS based Inertial Products which provide solutions in the Assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing domain.

The Avionics Principal Investigator is responsible for defining and leading the technical approach to enable development of excellent products with sustainable competitive advantage through technological differentiation. The Avionics Principal Investigator serves a key technical advisor to senior leadership, helping shape the technology strategy/roadmap to solve key problems for our customers and provide a competitive advantage for our product offerings.

This role will be a combination of technical strategy, research, and hands on iterative development to create world class MEMS based Inertial Products. You will be part of a highly committed team focused on the success of new MEMS-based PNT products being introduced in 2024 and beyond.

You will work with internal and external customers to complete customer driven product specifications. You will directly assist in product development processes, certification, and customer acceptance. Key responsibilities will include planning and execution of project subtasks on aggressive timelines.

This position is based in Grand Rapids, MI and includes flexibility to work Hybrid/Remote 1-2 days a week when possible. The position also offers participation in GE Aerospace’s bonus program.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

In addition to definition in the job summary, the Principal Investigator role and responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the research and development of embedded hardware & software to implement digital signal processing and complex controls solutions for MEMS based inertial navigation devices.

  • Discover value for customers by identifying key industry problems/opportunities which can be solved within GE’s product roadmaps.

  • Define key technologies and organizational competencies which are needed to solve customer problems and support product evolutions.

  • Collaborate with product stakeholders to develop Multi-Generational Technology Plans which align with or extend Multi-Generational Product Plans.

  • Collaborate with product leaders and GE Research to identify and pursue R&D programs that fund the development of key technologies.

  • Define and lead R&D programs (with internal and external partners) which advance technologies and organizational capabilities.

  • Collaborate with Application Engineers to define product solutions which utilize new technologies (or new applications of existing technologies)

  • Retain strong knowledge of emerging technologies, innovations, new technology applications, and segment-specific industry trends.

  • Form and cultivate industry relationships through participation in standard setting committee conferences and technical symposiums.

  • Influence key technical decision makers in ways that are favorable to GEs product and services strategy.

  • Actively participate in growth and mentoring of engineering talent and provide strong contributions to strategic workforce planning activities.

  • Collaborate with Application Engineers, Product Managers, Program Managers, and the marketing and sales staff to pursue new business, write proposals, and estimate cost.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering, computer science or related technical or scientific field of study from an accredited university or college.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in technical product development or technology research role(s).

  • This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, aeronautics or related technical or scientific field of study from an accredited university or college.

  • Strong technical expertise and applied experience in multiple of the following areas

  • Design, development, and testing of embedded hardware and software, including the use low-level programming languages (such as C, Assembly)

  • Methods and technologies for implementing embedded functions that perform GN&C in real time.

  • Fault-tolerant system design

  • Model-based engineering and computer simulation

  • System integration and hardware troubleshooting.

  • Digital Signal Processing and development of control loops for sensors in mixed-signal domain with high-speed digitization

  • Design and implementation of control solutions and algorithms to maximize performance vs specified parameters.

  • Practical understanding of ground- and satellite-based navigation systems and methods (e.g., GNSS, DME).

  • Knowledge of emerging trends in alternative sensors and methods of navigation and timing (e.g., vision- and magnetic anomaly-based navigation, celestial navigation). Knowledgeable of regulations, standards, and requirements that apply to GN&C of fixed-wing airplanes and rotorcraft

  • Strong experience specifying, developing, characterizing, integrating, and validating Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) AND strap-down Inertial Navigation Systems.

  • Practical understanding & hands-on experience with MEMS-based gyroscopes and accelerometers and their integration with real time embedded systems.

  • Proficient in identifying customer needs and collaborating with the engineering team to define solutions to meet those needs.

  • Proven track record of solving challenging technical problems.

  • Recognized as an industry expert in one or more areas of technical domain knowledge.

  • Established industry and academia network.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Highly motivated, clear thinker; ability to operate at both a systems and product level to connect technical decisions to business outcomes.

  • Strong strategic thinker, able to develop technical roadmaps and define technical solutions which enable multi-generational product evolutions.

  • Proven ability to research new technical concepts and apply them to product solutions.

  • Knowledgeable of processes and workflows for performing R&D and product development, validation, and verification.
