Job Title: Electronics Repair Technician
Job Description
The Electronics Repair Technician will diagnose, repair, and test electronic circuit boards at the component level, ensuring that each unit meets defined performance and quality standards. You will work with a variety of test equipment, apply advanced soldering and rework techniques, and collaborate closely with engineering and quality teams. This role requires strong technical expertise, meticulous attention to detail, and strict adherence to safety and electrostatic discharge (ESD) handling procedures.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and isolate faults on printed circuit boards (PCBs) and motherboards using test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, function generators, and other electronic test tools.
- Perform component-level repair on electronic circuit boards, including the removal and replacement of integrated circuits (ICs), resistors, capacitors, transistors, and other discrete and active components.
- Carry out advanced soldering and desoldering work on both surface-mount technology (SMT) and through-hole components, ensuring clean, reliable joints without damaging pads, traces, or the PCB substrate.
- Execute rework and modification of circuit cards as needed, including circuit board assembly, wiring, and mechanical assembly tasks to bring units back to full functionality.
- Conduct functional testing and validation of repaired circuit cards using test fixtures and automated test equipment (ATE) to confirm that boards meet specified performance parameters.
- Perform debugging and calibration activities to fine-tune electronic circuits and verify correct operation under defined conditions.
- Maintain accurate documentation of repair activities, including fault descriptions, components replaced, test procedures performed, and final test results for each unit.
- Record and report recurring issues or failure trends to support continuous process improvement and product quality enhancements.
- Interpret and work from schematic diagrams, blueprints, technical drawings, and other technical documentation to guide troubleshooting and repair efforts.
- Use hand tools, microscopes, and other inspection equipment to perform precise work on small components and densely populated circuit boards.
- Install and route wiring, conduit, and related hardware as required to complete assemblies or support installation and test setups.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality assurance teams to resolve complex technical issues, clarify requirements, and improve repair methods and test procedures.
- Follow all safety protocols and standard operating procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and correct handling of electrostatic-sensitive devices (ESD).
- Support production activities by ensuring repaired boards are completed efficiently, meet quality standards, and are ready for integration into larger systems or assemblies.
Essential Skills
- 8–10 years of hands-on experience in electronic testing, troubleshooting, and repairing circuit boards and motherboards at the component level.
- Proven experience in diagnosing and repairing electronic circuits and PCBs using schematic diagrams, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Strong knowledge of analog and digital electronics principles and their application in circuit board design and repair.
- High-level proficiency with electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators, logic analyzers, test fixtures, and other diagnostic tools.
- Exceptional soldering and desoldering skills for both surface-mount technology (SMT) and through-hole components, including fine-pitch devices.
- Demonstrated ability to perform circuit board assembly, rework, and repair, including component replacement and trace or pad repair.
- Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills to identify root causes of failures and implement effective corrective actions.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply information from schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical documentation.
- Excellent attention to detail and quality focus when performing repairs, inspections, and testing.
- Solid understanding of ESD-safe handling practices and safe operation of electronic test equipment and hand tools.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in electronics, a technical school certificate in electronics, or equivalent military training in a related field.
- Experience with electronic assembly, including circuit board assembly, wiring, and mechanical assembly tasks.
- Familiarity with industrial electronics environments, including production and repair of boards used in industrial applications.
- Proficiency using microscopes and other magnification tools to work on small components and dense PCB layouts.
- Experience with installation and setup of electronic equipment, including wiring, conduit, and related hardware.
- Experience in calibration and verification of electronic circuits and test setups.
- Comfort using a wide range of hand tools and test equipment in a production or repair setting.
- Strong problem-solving mindset, with the ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Good organizational skills to manage documentation, track repairs, and maintain accurate records of work performed.
