Job Summary

The R&D Systems Safety Engineer is primarily responsible for systems safety analyses of various aircraft systems in the early stages of development to inform architectural decisions and design requirements. The R&D Systems Safety Engineer is a key member of a high-performing team that utilizes a holistic development approach for complex systems in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment. Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with system architects in a model-based systems engineering environment (e.g. MATLAB System Composer) to develop protective strategies, fail-safe concepts, and architectural attributes that ensure product safety.
  • Lead, plan and perform reliability and safety analyses for trade studies of alternative design concepts.
  • Perform Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs) and Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSA) for advanced projects.
  • Capture and validate maintainability, reliability, and safety requirements.
  • Perform Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), using CAFTA or equivalent, and Common Cause Analyses (CCAs) of electrical and/or mechanical systems (ref. SAE ARP4761).
  • Perform Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) of electrical and/or mechanical assemblies per MIL-STD-1629A, SAE ARP4761, RIAC FMD-2013, RIAC NPRD-2011, NSWC-11, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
  • Perform System Safety Assessments (SSAs)
  • Review supplier safety deliverables for completeness and accuracy (i.e. FTA, FHA, FMEA, reliability predictions, SSA).
  • Refine system safety review processes, in cooperation with Experiment Flight Test, for prototype designs on flight test aircraft.
  • Participate in safety of flight (SOF) determinations.
  • General familiarity with system, software and complex electronic hardware development processes (e.g. ARP4754A, RTCA/DO-178, RTCA/DO-254)
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and their implications to system safety and certification (e.g. artificial intelligence).
  • Develop tasks and procedures for flight crew and periodic maintenance requirements in accordance with regulation.
  • Support investigations of in-service reliability and/or safety issues.
  • Manages relationships and personalities with the ability to collaborate and maintain successful team member relationships.
  • Communicates and resolves project constraints collaboratively. Escalates as needed.
  • Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Travel requirements estimated at 10.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • 10 years or greater experience in Systems Safety Analysis

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • Experience as a FAA DER/ODA unit member with systems and equipment safety analysis approval delegation.
  • General familiarity with general aviation aircraft operations.
  • General familiarity with Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT), Reliability Growth Testing (RGT), and Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) desirable.
  • Experience with FAR Part 23 and/or Part 25, Part 27, or Part 29 system design and/or safety certification of electrical and/or mechanical systems

  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to read, write and speak the English language.
  • Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to efficiently learn new skills and manage multiple tasks.
  • Experienced in use of lab equipment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio)
  • Performing cost and weight studies for alternative design concepts
