JOB SUMMARY:

The electric propulsion engineer is responsible for the design, integration, optimization, and execution of HV power electronics (e.g. 3φ with FOC) and high efficiency motors (e.g. PMSM IPM), bringing experience to reduce design iterations and enable innovation. The work environment will utilize a fast-paced team that offers multi-disciplinary experience with hands on mentoring opportunities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Drive electric propulsion design and deep understanding of HV inverters and PMSM motors, FOC techniques (e.g. SVPWM, field weakening), motor efficiency optimization and design tradeoffs, axial and radial flux machines, and analysis techniques
  2. Establish controls & electronics integration, bringing experience in optimization of areas such as inverter switching frequency, slew rate, device selection and associated gate drive, motor inductance and winding selection, air gap and shape selection, motor loss quantification, resolver selection, THD and EMI reduction, and motor mapping
  3. Define requirements for electric power generation based on loads and environment
  4. Lead structural integration, thermal management analysis and integration
  5. Oversee electric power generation technical management, vehicle integration oversight, and qualification support, including supplier technical oversight for procured system components
  6. Support future design and performance trade studies by collaborating with other vehicle design teams such as Flight Technologies, Avionics and Controls, and Airframe Design
  7. Support of propulsion system component qualification and flight test activities
Job Requirements:

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering Technology
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Aerospace Engineering
    • Other related Engineering field
  • Master’s Degree related to power electronics and electric machining preferred

QUALIFICATONS:  

  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills in electrical, thermal, structural, and systems domains, including root cause determination and corrective action
  • Technical evaluation of and managing subcontracts including SOW, specifications, ICDs, RFPs, and schedules
  • Supplier technical oversight: requirements flow-down, supplier management, and supplier-level component and system qualification support
  • Strong computer, written and verbal communication skills required
  • Simulation and analysis experience in power electronics, coupled with electric machine and embedded controls, e.g. Simplorer. PMSM design exploration, e.g. with Maxwell 2D/3D desired
  • HV DC-DC converter design experience desired
  • Familiarity with 14 CFR Part 23, 25, 27, and/or 29 for commercial and military qualification and certification of aircraft systems desired
  • Experience with mechanical systems integration, development, and testing desired
