Job Description

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. From the seabed to outer space, you can contribute to work that matters with a company where diversity, equity and inclusion are shared values. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

We are Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T): Boeings global research and development team creating and implementing innovative technologies that make the impossible possible and enabling the future of aerospace.  We are engineers and technicians, skilled scientists and bold innovators; Join us and put your passion, determination, and skill to work building the future!   TheFutureIsBuiltHere  ChangeTheWorld

This position is part of the rapidly growing Electro-Optical (EO) / Infra-Red (IR) Mission Systems team within BR&T. The EO/IR Mission Systems (EMS) team has more than quadrupled in size over the past 18 months due to new contract wins, and continues to see increased demand from Boeing’s customers. We’re designing, building, and testing cutting edge sensor systems for airborne and space platforms. Our focus is always on the mission – connecting people through safer air travel and protection of the warfighter from its adversaries.

This isn’t your typical Boeing team – we are focused on the entire lifecycle of design: from modeling and simulation of new ideas, through prototype demonstrations, and eventually transitioning to production systems. Our team provides complete engineering solutions to Boeing and its customers, including systems engineering, optics design, mechanical design, algorithms, software development, firmware development, electronics, and advanced system modeling and simulations. If you’re interested in working in a fast pace environment while taking a design from clean sheet of paper through flight demonstration, with technology that’s never been flown before, then this is the group for you.

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our team in Huntington Beach, California and lead the development of Special Test Equipment (STE).  We are looking for a broad range of experience including Lead or Senior level Engineer.

This role will support the functional checkout and verification of electronics, software and firmware/FPGA products for optical sensing systems on space and airborne platforms. The person selected for this role will be responsible for leading a diverse technical team in the design, development, maintenance and use of state-of-the-art Special Test Equipment (STE) for automated testing of electrical hardware and software.

Our engineers work on a variety of space-grade electronics, from power and digital subsystems to EO/IR sensor systems. The STE team is responsible for the cradle-to-grave design, build, validation, and support of the specialized test equipment that ensures these flight products and systems perform as intended in their extreme operating environments.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with multiple cross-functional teams to lead in the design, development, procurement, assembly and utilization of state-of-the-art Special Test Equipment (STE) for the functional checkout and verification of electronics (primarily digital circuits), FPGA design and software products

  • Define and document requirements and capabilities of the STE in order to ensure testing needs are adequately satisfied

  • Make recommendations for and guide the procurement of test equipment, ensuring the test and evaluation setup has the right tools for the job

  • Interface with supplier management in support of procurement activities

  • Design and conduct various test methodologies to support designs and to gather data for technical performance measures at the card and unit levels

  • Develop test scripts/software to automate control of STE and test of HW and SW

  • Document designs, test plans/procedures and analysis results

  • Manage the development, maintenance, and vetting of technical roadmaps for Specialized Test Equipment development and sustainment

  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement process and tool improvements for the organization
