Boeing Defense Space & Security has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Analyst/Scientist with camera/optics knowledge to support the development of electro-optical systems at the Starfire Optical Range, Kirtland AFB, NM. This position supports the R&D mission of the Air Force Research Laboratory Optics Division in their advancement of Space Domain Awareness capabilities. Our site houses telescope research facilities ranging in size from 0.5m up to 3.5m with advanced optical systems. This engineer would work as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting the development of electro-mechanical pointing and tracking control systems. The ideal candidate would assist with gathering camera test requirements from users, setup sensitive optical equipment in a laboratory and collect and analyze scientific data. Our team consists of engineers and technicians in all disciplines required to plan, design, integrate, and test complex optical, electronic, quantum systems to achieve research objectives.
Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including; Associate, Experienced and Lead Level Engineers.
Position Responsibilities:
- Gather camera test requirements from users who may not be familiar with camera testing procedures
- Setup sensitive optical equipment in a laboratory
- Collect and analyze scientific data in a laboratory.
- Prepares presentations and papers to document results.
- Develop and run data analysis codes in Matlab, Mathematica, or Python
- Complete tasks with minimal guidance and with changing requirements
This position is expected to be 100 onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
This position requires the ability to obtain U.S. Security Clearance, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. (An interim and/or final U.S. Top Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.)
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, computer science, mathematics or astronomy (or similar)
- Experience and knowledge with Matlab, Mathematica, Python and Scheme
- Experience with collecting and analyzing data and documenting results
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 9 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- An active U.S. Top Secret security clearance
- Course work in sensors and radiometry
- Course work in calibrating CCDs and CMOS cameras is highly desired
- 3 years of experience working with (hands-on) scientific cameras, to include CCD, CMOS, and hybrid diode array cameras
Typical Education & Experience:
Associate (Level 2):
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Experienced (Level 3):
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Lead (Level 4):
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years related work experience, Master+7 years related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Relocation:
Relocation assistance is not a negotiable benefit for this position. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

Summary pay range for associate level: $79,900 – $108,100
Summary pay range for experienced level: $97,750 – $132,250
Summary pay range for lead level: $118,150 – $159,850
