Job Description:
Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.

The Fire Protection and Life Safety Engineer position will be instrumental in guiding the company’s effort to shape undefined fire and safety policies that impact the infrastructure requirements and aircraft procedures designed around our aircraft. The role will also provide expertise knowledge to multiple teams throughout the company currently working on training requirements and community engagement.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and document fire risk assessments, including the conduct of fire load analyses according to acceptable modeling or simulation techniques for heliports, hangars, and general infrastructure
  • Design fire protection strategies including construction, fire suppression, fire detection, and utility requirements according to prescriptive standards or performance-based approaches
  • Develop design briefs and other project materials necessary to demonstrate compliance through alternative methods, an acceptable level of safety to Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for all projects governing heliports, hangars, and general infrastructure
  • Support code modernization efforts with standards development organizations and code development bodies
  • Support information sharing and safety promotion activities with the FAA and other civil aviation authorities on issues related to airport rescue and firefighting (ARFF), hazardous material handling, and occupational safety
Required
  • A B.S. in fire protection engineering or relevant discipline
  • Fire Protection P.E. licensing required
  • At least 5 years of relevant fire protection and/or life safety design/engineering experience (to include fire alarm, fire protection, fire management systems, hydraulic calculations, building egress, and life safety analysis and systems)
  • Experience in fire protection as it relates to Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Working knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Building Code (IBC), Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), FM Global standards, and/or other guidance (including state and local guidance) relating to fire protection and suppression
  • Be the primary point of contact with relevant regulatory bodies and associations such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
  • Conduct comprehensive fire hazard assessments, with emphasis on battery storage, and risk analyses for various projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations
  • Develop fire safety training materials for firefighters and fire departments, covering the Joby aircraft, operation, and fire and life safety related scenarios
  • Experience working with teams of architects and engineers to produce fully coordinated designs
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Microstation, HASS, AutoSPRINK, Fire Dynamics Simulator, and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Excellent written, verbal, and listening (English) communication skills
  • Travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements

The target base pay for this position is $91,400 - $140,900/year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.
