Jr. Data Engineer

Job Description:

The Junior Data Engineer will support the design, development, and maintenance of M1’s centralized data platform within the Azure Government Community Cloud (GCCH) environment. Working closely with and learning from the senior Data Engineer, this role will focus on developing ETL pipelines, ensuring data quality, and contributing to compliance-ready data solutions. This position is designed for a motivated early-career professional eager to grow technical expertise while directly contributing to M1’s critical data engineering and predictive analytics initiatives.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Data Pipeline Development
• Assist in building, testing, and deploying ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest and transform data from operational, personnel, parts, and aircraft systems into the centralized Data Lake.
• Implement basic data cleansing, validation, and normalization routines under the guidance of the Data Engineer.
• Support integration of structured and unstructured data into the Azure GCCH environment. Platform Operations & Support
• Monitor daily data pipeline jobs, troubleshoot issues, and escalate complex problems to the senior engineer.
• Perform data quality checks, validation scripts, and error logging to maintain data integrity.
• Document data workflows, mappings, and integration points.
• Assist with implementation of compliance-related monitoring and reporting standards. Compliance & Security
• Learn and follow industry standards (FedRAMP, NIST, DoD, and CMMC) applicable to data engineering within GCCH.
• Implement access controls, data masking, and encryption policies as directed by senior team members. Collaboration & Growth
• Work closely with BI Analysts to ensure clean, reliable data flows into reporting and dashboards.
• Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and team retrospectives to build agile project experience.
• Actively engage in mentorship with the senior Data Engineer to expand technical depth in cloud-native data engineering.

Qualifications and Experience:
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related technical field.
• Relevant certifications or coursework in cloud/data engineering a plus (e.g., Azure Fundamentals, Azure Data Engineer Associate [in progress or planned]). Experience
• 1–3 years of professional or internship experience in data engineering, software development, or database administration.
• Hands-on familiarity with:
o Strong foundational SQL skills, including writing queries for data extraction, transformation, and validation. o Functional knowledge of at least programming language (Python preferred). o Azure Data Factory (ADF) / Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) o Azure Synapse Analytics or Fabric o Version control systems (e.g., Git) o ETL processes and data transformation concepts.
• Exposure to cloud environments (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP experience considered transferable).
• Prior experience with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar) a plus.
• Exposure to CI/CD concepts or DevOps practices is a plus Skills & Competencies
• Eager to learn Azure GCCH technologies and compliance-driven data practices.
• Strong attention to detail with a focus on data quality, accuracy, and security.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and follow structured development practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a growth-oriented mindset.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in documenting processes and technical details.
Working Conditions:

• Reports to Software & Data Engineer Manager at M1’s Enterprise, AL Office
• Office environment with remote work allowed depending on business needs
