Job Summary

The R&D Staff Mechanical Engineer is primarily responsible for equipment design and aircraft installation of various aircraft electro-mechanical systems in the early stages of product development. The R&D Staff Mechanical Engineer is a key member of a high-performing team that utilizes a holistic development approach for complex systems in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment. Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions

· Provide mechanical designs and mockups that support R&D flight tests, laboratories and ground-based human factors experiments.

· Assist technicians in the installation of prototype systems into flight test vehicles or laboratories.

· Apply knowledge of common design and drafting principles, guidelines, specifications, and standards to create basic layouts, sketches, models and drawings in a preliminary design environment.

· Interface with rapid prototyping resources (e.g. 3D print, stereolithography & prototype CNC machine shops)

· Create solid models of systems, equipment, and their installations in 3D CAD software (Creo Parametric preferred) according to company standards.

· Integrate with other designers and existing 3D designs within a complex assembly (Aircraft Level).

· Create detailed design, assembly and installation drawings.

· Manage models, drawings and other data within product data management software (Windchill PDMLink preferred)

· Perform power consumption, weight, size, and maintainability analyses for trade studies of alternative mechanical design concepts.

· Perform free play, geometric tolerance stack-up (GD&T), kinematic, performance and thermal analyses (ability to model performance in Simulink is preferred).

· Perform initial loads and sizing for stress/stiffness calculations.

· Perform initial material and processes selection.

· Collaborate with EWIS (Electrical Wiring Interconnection Systems) design engineers.

· Develop envelope and interface requirements in Mechanical Interface Control Documents.

· Create instrumentation installation drawings, as required.

· Collaborate with systems and safety engineering to provide installations that meet separation requirements.

· Collaborate with team members to define aircraft level space reservation.

· Collaborate with systems engineering to define expectations for supplier mechanical design deliverables.

· Review supplier mechanical design deliverables for completeness and accuracy.

· Travel requirements estimated at 10.

Required Education and/or Experience:

· B.S. in Mechanical Engineering

· 10 plus years of relevant experience in aerospace mechanical design.

Distinguishing Education and/or Experience:

· General familiarity with aircraft systems, system development, and industry specific certification processes (e.g. ARP4761, ARP4754A, RTCA DO-160)

· Familiarity with interaction of systems and structures regulatory requirements.

· Experience with FAR Part 23 and/or Part 25, Part 27, or Part 29 system design and/or safety certification of electrical and/or mechanical systems

· Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering

· Experienced in controls simulation using Simulink and related toolboxes.

· Familiarity with aircraft fly by wire systems.

· Experience with composite structures

· Involvement with industry groups to develop relevant standards.

· General Aviation Pilot

· Must be able to demonstrate the ability to read, write and speak the English language

· Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner

· Ability to work both independently and within a cross-functional team

· Ability to efficiently learn new skills and manage multiple tasks

· Experienced in use of lab equipment

· Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio)

· Performing cost and weight studies for alternative design concepts
