The Part Marker is responsible for accurately identifying and labeling castings with required serial numbers, heat/lot numbers, and other traceability information. This role uses a combination of computerized spaning programs, mechanical stamping/engraving equipment, and occasional hand scribing to apply permanent and legible spanings in accordance with customer specifications and internal procedures. The Part Marker also supports inspection-related tasks such as handling NDT samples, verifying spaning quality, and performing or assisting with hardness testing to ensure compliance with aerospace standards.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Apply permanent identification spanings (serial numbers, heat/lot numbers, part numbers, and other required codes) to castings and aerospace parts per work instructions, customer requirements, and internal procedures.
- Operate computer programs and spaning equipment (e.g., dot peen, etch/engrave systems, stamping tools, or other spaning methods) to produce consistent, legible, and compliant spanings.
- Perform hand scribing when required, ensuring spanings meet readability and depth standards without damaging part surfaces.
- Maintain part traceability by verifying and recording correct part identity, serial number assignments, and spaning documentation throughout the workflow.
- Assist with creation and updates to spaning instructions/cards (spaning card instructions) including placement, orientation, character size, and method requirements.
- Properly handle and segregate NDT samples and welds, ensuring correct identification, separation, and protection from damage or mix-ups.
- Visually inspect castings and components for defects, spaning issues, or nonconformances and notify appropriate personnel when abnormalities are found.
- Perform or assist with hardness testing per procedure, when required, and ensure results are documented and traceable to the correct part.
- Properly care for and maintain spaning tools and stamps, ensuring equipment is clean, serviceable, and stored correctly to prevent wear or damage.

- Ability to perform visual inspections and recognize spaning defects (incorrect characters, poor depth/contrast, misplacement, etc.).
- Understanding of basic aerospace traceability requirements (lot/heat/serial control and segregation practices).
- Ability to use measuring/verification tools as needed (e.g., depth verification, visual comparators, etc.).
- Good communication skills and willingness to escalate discrepancies quickly.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and respirators when necessary.
