Role Summary

The Principal Network Reliability Engineer is a subject matter expert in Wi-Fi and Cellular technology strategy used for our front-line mobile workforce. As an individual contributor, this role builds processes and operational best practices, collaborating with Enterprise Architects, evangelizing security program fundamentals, ensuring appropriate collection and analysis of technical and functional requirements, designing, and implementing security controls, and more. In addition, the candidate will maintain, configure, upgrade, and assist with the design and implementation of technologies that secure the enterprise network.

Key Duties

  • Lead and shape DevNetOps practices and enhance network infrastructure and service deliver.

  • Build processes and operational best practices for Wi-Fi and Cellular technologies and support.

  • Collaborate with Network Engineering and Network Reliability teams and perform on-site surveys to design and implement Wi-Fi and Cellular solutions

  • Ensure appropriate collection and analysis of technical and functional requirements for Wi-Fi and Cellular technologies.

  • Analyze connectivity related day-to-day tasks performed by the Mobile Engineering and Reliability team and demonstrate how they can be improved by automation and/or programmability with emphasis on facilitating consistent, faster delivery of services.

  • Work with InfoSec to develop strategies for perimeter network security controls and participate in incident response

  • Act as a subject matter expert in the operational sustainment of mobile connectivity, including fielding user requests, actively manage network incidents, and escalations, providing 24x7 on-call support as needed

  • Manage and execute life cycle process for network equipment, including OS patching and upgrades

  • Develop and implement resilient network backup and recovery to maintain reliable network operating system and tools (e.g., Solarwinds).

  • Helps define best practices for network management systems, including recommendations for key performance indicators and alert thresholds.

  • Analyze data traffic patterns within network infrastructure, detecting operational problems and recommending changes to ensure optimal network utilization.

  • Perform installations and configurations of enterprise network devices, including routers, switches, and wireless access points, firewalls, and remote access concentrators, works directly with customers to resolve incidents.

  • Drive network deployment projects by creating work break-down structures, work instruction packages, and tracks to completion all network deliverables for the project.

  • Lead in the development and production of complex documentation for installation, network topology, and troubleshooting of communications hardware or software.

  • Regularly monitor all network devices to provide rapid issue resolution and provide reporting metrics as needed.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • 7 years managing enterprise network topologies with Cisco IOS/NXOS, Junos OS route/switch infrastructure and FortiNet firewalls or related experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in computer science or a related discipline; or an additional 2 years in lieu of this degree with CCNP – CCIE level certifications

  • Proficiency in Infrastructure automation technologies and languages – Ansible, Chef, Puppet, Python, Bash

  • Working knowledge in cellular 5G technology

  • Experience implementing and maintaining enterprise class Wi-Fi infrastructure, with focus on Cisco WLC, Cisco Wireless Access Points, and Juniper MIST

  • Ability to interpret data captures and debug at packet level

  • Demonstrate comfort working within a highly critical data center environment, with absolute adherence to change control processes

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with ITIL process and procedures

  • Experience with SolarWinds, Infoblox and similar network management tools

  • Knowledge of QoS, DSCP, and traffic engineering for VoIP

  • Experience with Ekahau software for site surveys

  • Familiarity with cellular technology, theory and application, including modern mobile devices and apps

  • Working knowledge of infrastructure components; cloud, compute, database and storage

  • Experience diagnosing performance issues in complex distributed applications

Salary Range

$136,100 - $204,100 / year

Salary Details

Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
