Systems Safety Engineering is part of Systems Engineering that complements the technical activities required to deliver a project. It deals with engineering that influence the systems' design and architecture in terms of performance, safety, supportability, testability, and cost consideration throughout the lifecycle of the product. Safety Engineering applies methods, standards, and techniques to provide clarification of system requirements to software, hardware, and test personnel to ensure design and architecture considerations are appropriately allocated to the system and horizontally integrated across the development teams. The Safety Engineering function supports systems engineering activities including trade studies, use case development, requirements definition and derivation, interface definition, and requirement validation and verification. As such, Systems Safety Engineers interface with the other engineering disciplines and logistics engineering functions to ensure integration and continuity in the design and development process. Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance. As a memeber of the Engineering Team, expect a dynamic and demanding environment that values discipline, adherence to processes, and adding value to our customers through respective disciplines. The candidate is expected to live in the Indianapolis area and to be onsite 60 of the time. This position serves as a member of the Vertex Engineering Team and supports various programs within a matrix management assignment as directed. Deliverables include, but not limited to, System Safety Management Plan, Preliminary Hazard Analysis, System Safety Risk Assessment, System Safety Hazard Analysis Report, Safety and Health Data Sheets, technical reports, schedules, basis of estimates for new pursuits, and analyses as required to execute program systems safety for Army programs. This position requires the ability to perform core systems engineering tasks in addition to Systems Safety tasks when needed. Required Skills:
• U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
• Experience with System Safety Engineering practices as derived from MIL-STD-882E, and Joint Software Systems Safety Committee (JSSSC) Handbook.
• Ability to produce DoD required documentation, such as: o System Safety Management Plan o Preliminary Hazard Analysis o Functional Hazard Assessment o System Safety Risk Assessment, o System Safety Hazard Analysis Report o Safety and Health Data Sheets, o Safety Engineering Analysis Report o Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Report o Safety Assessment Report o Engineering Change Proposal System Safety Report o Waiver or Deviation System Safety Report (WDSSR) o Health Hazard Assessment Report o Safety Studies Report o Safety Studies Plan o Mishap Risk Assessment Report
• Experience with requirements development, hardware and software development and verification


Desired Skills:
• Experience with DoD System Safety Programs, Army experience preferred
• Strong written, verbal and presentation skills
• Strong interpersonal and project management skills, with the ability to manage a safety program and provide direction to supporting safety personnel
• Understanding of Software Development Lifecycle (including Agile and/or Waterfall)
• Experience with a wide application of technical theories and concepts related to system safety engineering
• Knowledge of AR 385-10, Army System Safety Management Guide, MIL-HDBK-454, MIL-STD-464, MIL-STD-1425, AMCOM 385-17, and Human Systems Integration, SAE 6906
• Experience Software System Safety Technical Review Panels (SSSTRP) or Software Materiel Release activities
• Experience developing proposals and basis of estimates
• Experience in other Systems Specialty areas such as Reliability , Human Factors, etc. Education Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree and 8 years of relevant experience OR in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required.
