Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.

Joby Aviation is looking for a passionate engineer that can join our growing team. This is a multidisciplinary position that provides the engineer a chance to interact with many of the key teams within the company. The Systems Engineers will own the architecture, integration, and life-cycle success of the aircraft systems under their responsibility, ranging from requirements management, development, certification, and entry into service. Systems Engineers will coordinate between the various departments - Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software, Flight Test, Manufacturing, Operations - as necessary to ensure the technical success of their systems. The Systems Engineers will work very closely with FAA Engineers and Joby DERs to ensure their responsible systems comply with all federal airworthiness regulations.

This position requires a solid understanding of aircraft systems, system development, and industry-specific certification processes. Primary areas of responsibility will include aircraft engine design, performance, and certification. The most important traits at Joby are attitude towards the project, hard work ethic, and being able to self-manage and learn new skills. Responsibilities

The Propulsion-Engine Systems Engineer will be responsible for coordinating the certification activities of the engine (EPU - Electric Propulsion Unit) and its subsystems which include the propulsion motor, power electronics, engine controls, fire protection, and cooling system. These activities include influencing the design, development, testing, and analysis that ensure successful compliance demonstrations. Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Generate, review, approve, and manage system requirements – including but not limited to regulatory, safety, design, environmental, manufacturing, quality, operational, and service requirements
  • Design support including architecture trade studies and interface definition
  • Coordination of compliance methodologies including test, analysis, and simulation
  • System integration, verification and validation testing including test planning, test case identification/development/reviews, detailed test procedure development/review, data reduction and analysis, problem reporting and issue tracking, and test report writing.
  • Generate, review, and approve:
  • Design specifications
  • System and equipment test plans and reports
  • Compliance documentation
  • System engineering processes
  • Management, mitigation, and resolution of issues, risks, and opportunities using enterprise tools
  • Preparation of artifacts and briefing materials for internal and external technical meetings and program reviews
  • For this role, U.S. based employees must be on site, in our Northern California location, up to 50 of the time
Required
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics required; Electrical, Mechanical, and Aerospace Engineering preferred
  • 10+ years of experience with an engine OEM in a combination of aircraft engine design, development, and certification
  • Previous experience in engine or propulsion system testing, including test plan development, instrumentation, data acquisition, and documenting and analyzing results
  • Skilled at creating and reviewing technical schematics, logical and functional diagrams, and engineering specifications
  • Working knowledge of RTCA document DO-160
  • Working knowledge of safety analyses and processes, including Advisory Circular 23.1309-1E, SAE ARP 4761, and SAE ARP 4754A
  • Excellent problem solving, communication, and technical writing skills 
  • Thorough knowledge of FAA regulations and guidance material and industry standards, particularly related to 14 CFR Part 33 Engines
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Docs

Desired
  • 15+ years experience in a combination of aircraft engine design, development, and certification
  • Current consultant Engines DER for the FAA
  • Aerospace industry experience in engine controls
  • Extensive experience integrating and testing complex, highly integrated systems
  • Powerplant installation experience per Part 23/25/27/29 Subpart E
  • Electric vehicle technology experience
  • Ability to utilize Atlassian tools including Jira, Confluence, and Crucible
  • Familiar with Siemens Polarion requirements management tool

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $97,500 - $213,900/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
