Senior Technical Intern - Software Engineering

Job Summary

As a software engineering intern for DRS Naval Electronics, you will apply your technical and development experience to solve software design-related problems for components and subsystems in our portfolio of US Navy electronics infrastructure solutions. Job focus areas include participating in software engineering activities in design, development, testing, modification, and the sustainment of software products throughout the product life cycle.

Job Responsibilities

In this role, the candidate will be responsible for assigned technical solutions. Primary and essential accountabilities include, but not limited to, the following:

• Ability to work both as part of a team and independently under supervision of others and provide regular reporting of progress and status. Responsible for completion of assigned task on time and meeting technical requirements.


• Design, development, analysis, testing and debug of computer software applications.
  
  
  
  • Software applications may include Image and Signal Processing, Real-time, Firmware, Database Design, Operating Systems, Operator/Machine Interface, or others.
  
  
  • This includes working with previously written code to make bug fixes and improvements.
  
  
  • Development and deployment performed on Red Hat Linux OS.
  
  
  
  


• Support software qualification efforts, development of test software and qualification plans, test activities, and failure analysis efforts.


• Develop and present software-related material to support internal project reviews.


• Create and process documentation updates including generation and maintenance of reference data.


• Participate in Internal Research and Development (IR&D) projects, which may include prototype design and development.


• Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required.


• Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the mission, values, and culture of the organization.

Pursuing a Technical degree (Bachelor of Science) in Computer Science or relevant field in the senior year with at least two years of programming experience in an object-oriented language including java or C++. Self-starting motivated individual with excellent oral and written communication skills.

Capable of achieving project objectives and interfacing with team members and program management. The following skills are desirable, though applicants are not required to have every skill listed:

• Background in Software Engineering, including participation in multi-discipline, cross-functional teams on software development efforts.
• Familiarity with applying legacy, new and emerging industry and military standards for Software Engineering processes, techniques, and tools (e.g., Agile, UML, and SysML).
• Familiarity with requirements management processes and tools (e.g., DOORS)
• Familiarity with software design processes and tools using UML (e.g., Enterprise Architect).
• Familiarity with software lifecycle processes such as continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), Development Security Operations (DevSecOps), version control, testing (e.g., Clear Case, Git, Jenkins).
• Familiarity with legacy, new and emerging distributed software architectures (e.g., client/server, thin client, Peer-to-Peer, Cloud, Web Services, Service-Oriented Architecture, Microservices, hardware virtualization, Software as a Service, mobile computing).
• Fluency in multiple software programming languages (e.g., Java, C, C++, Bash, DOS).
• Fluency in developing in and for multiple operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux).
• Familiarity in multiple software domains (e.g., algorithm development, middleware services, operating systems, device drivers, combat systems, real-time embedded systems, human interfaces, test harnesses, formal methods).
• Experience gathering and interpreting data, generating summaries and presentations, and presenting to technical leads and peers.
