Job Summary

Assists Manufacturing Engineers with designing tooling to efficiently fabricate and assemble aircraft components.

Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Assists with designing tooling (patterns, lay-up molds, drill fixtures, applied trim and drill templates, assembly jigs, etc.) for manufacturing components and assemblies to conform to engineering drawings.
  • Determines a logical assembly order of components and designs tooling accordingly.
  • Coordinates with Tool Control and Quality Assurance for tool verification and acceptance.
  • Coordinates with Planning to ensure that work orders accurately reflect the actual methods and tools used for the fabrication of a given component.
  • Implements tooling into the production environment, trains technicians in the use of tooling, and validates the effectiveness of tooling in providing adequate results/quality.
  • Designs check templates and gauges needed for alignment and/or calibration of aircraft systems (e.g., control surface deflection templates, weight and balance ramps, and scales).
  • Designs handling and transport fixtures for moving components and assemblies both in-house and out-of-house.
  • Assist in tracking tool progress in terms of both budget and timing.
  • Participates in tooling design reviews providing suggestions for improvement where necessary.
  • Follows and improves established standards and procedures including modeling techniques, file storage procedures, and training in accordance with Cirrus procedures.
  • Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.

  • Associates degree from a college, university, or technical school; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in tool design and layout.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of tooling and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong understanding of general machine tools and tool room equipment abilities and capabilities.
  • Ability to visualize complex 3D geometry and motion.
  • Must have strong CAD skills (3D tool design in Creo preferred).
  • Functional familiarity with CAM software.
  • Strong creative mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
