Role IntroductionReports to: Financial Services Manager - Japan
Location / Country: Tokyo / Japan
Employment Condition: 2-year part-time contract
Deliver accurate and timely payroll services that employees depend on every day. Working closely with the Finance Manager in Japan, you will manage payroll processes end-to-end - from maintaining employee records to verifying timesheets, calculating wages and deductions, and ensuring all data meets internal controls and local regulatory requirements.
Your work connects multiple stakeholders, including employees, managers, and government agencies, requiring careful attention to detail and a strong understanding of payroll legislation and business practices in Japan. You will also contribute to financial reporting, reconciliations, and payroll-related analysis, helping explain variances and support audits and compliance activities.
This is a hands-on role where your precision and responsiveness directly shape employee experience and operational reliability—giving you the opportunity to build expertise in payroll, strengthen financial processes, and contribute to a culture of accuracy and trust at Cathay.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain employee payroll records, including new hire enrolment and ongoing updates, ensuring data is complete and accurate.
- Compile and process payroll data, calculating wages, deductions, and adjustments in line with established timelines.
- Verify timesheets, including overtime, leave, and travel records, ensuring all entries are properly authorised.
- Ensure payroll inputs comply with internal controls, company policies, and applicable legislation and regulations.
- Prepare and submit required government reports, responding to surveys and meeting statutory deadlines.
- Handle payroll-related queries from employees and government authorities, providing clear and timely responses.
- Calculate and process payroll remittances and perform monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations.
- Support audit requirements by preparing documentation for pensions, workers’ compensation, social insurance, and tax-related matters.
- Organise and maintain payroll documentation in line with record retention and archiving policies.
- Assist with payroll analysis, budgeting support, administrative tasks, and process improvement initiatives as required.
Requirements- Degree in Accounting or a related discipline is an advantage.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in finance or accounting with payroll experience is essential.
- Experience in the airline industry is an advantage.
- Experience using SAP is an advantage.
- Sound understanding of local business practices related to payroll and associated processes in Japan.
- Demonstrated ability to improve work practices and implement streamlined processes.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to adapt to change and work effectively in evolving environments.
- Must have the legal right to live and work in Japan.
Benefits- Base salary: JPY200,000
- Life support allowance: JPY30,400/month
- Other allowances: the company regulations apply
- Social insurance: Unemployment insurance, Workers compensation insurance, Health insurance, Welfare pension insurance
- Commuting allowance: Provided
- Working days: 4 days/week (7.5 working hours/day)
- Break time: 1 hour/day
- Probation period: 3 months
- Annual leave: Granted after completing probationary period (prorated based on the month of joining)
