Position Type: Permanent
Job Description:
Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.

Working as a Composites M&P Technician you will support the materials qualification effort leading to the development, certification, and production of eVTOL aircraft. The role requires composite fabrication and laboratory experience. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret and work to a variety of engineering drawings and specifications for the fabrication of a variety of composite laminate and bonded composite panel types
  • Layup of prepreg composite panels, including sandwich structures
  • Structural bonding of cured composite laminate panels – including hybrid joints, using various types of two-part epoxy adhesives as well as single and two-part sealant materials
  • Mold prep and maintenance of tooling plates, caul plates, panel bonding fixtures, and a variety of hand-tools used for composite layup and adhesive bonding
  • Use of a variety of calibrated dimensional inspection tools (including calipers, calibrated scales, micrometers, etc.)
  • Interpreting and working to a variety of ASTM, SACMA, and MIL-SPEC standards for a variety of material characterization and development tests
  • Responsible operation of electromechanical test frames, test fixturing, thermal test chambers, environmental conditioning chambers, and relevant software on testing workstations
  • Use of dimensional inspection equipment to record and present specimen dimension data prior to testing
  • Performing calculations in both standard and metric units
  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized workspace
  • Following all Joby safety procedures, including all OSHA regulations/requirements
Required
  • Minimum 3+ years of composite fabrication experience (additional experience working in a materials lab or aviation/aerospace setting is highly preferred)
  • Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent (an Associates degree or equivalent trade certification in composites is a plus)
  • Strong math skills and a knowledge of engineering documentation, drawings, and models (understanding of and familiarity with GD&T)
  • Ability to read and operate inspection equipment including calipers, micrometers, height-gauges, microscopes, and scales
  • Basic knowledge of prepreg composites and material properties (including twill and uni-directional prepregs, paste and film adhesives, and honeycomb core)
  • Ability to lift >50 lbs. unassisted and stand at work station for extended periods of time (>4 hours), not including meals and break times
  • MS Office Suite and general computer skills (experience with multiple types of test equipment software is a plus)
Desired
  • Excellent technical aptitude and analytical skills
  • Experience working in a materials qualification setting is highly preferred
  • A fundamental understanding of composite test standards and common failure modes is also highly preferred
  • Highly developed attention to detail and critical thinking skills
