26.39ph umbrella – 12 months

Your main responsibilities as a Technologist/Chemist (Energetic Materials Scientist)
Would you like to join a scientific development team involved in the development, manufacture and test of energetic materials to support new and legacy ammunition products? BAE Systems Land (UK) currently has vacancies for Energetic Materials Scientists to be involved with the design and development of secondary explosives and pyrotechnics for use in Artillery, Mortar, Medium Calibre and Warhead products at our site in South Wales.

As a technologist/Chemist, you will be involved in the development, testing, qualification, synthesis and manufacture of energetic materials. This position will be primarily based at BAE Systems Land (UK) in Glascoed, Monmouthshire, however, occasional travel to other manufacturing and test and evaluation sites will be necessary.

Responsibilities
• To assess the technology of materials and mixing processes for future developments in secondary explosives and pyrotechnics
• To synthesise new and novel energetic materials
• To conduct technical work on appropriate processing and measurement facilities to provide test data.
• To provide support to Engineering and Operations Departments in the chemistry and processing of secondary explosives and pyrotechnics.
• To report on work and testing undertaken
• Compiling and reviewing safe system of work paperwork to cover team’s routine and special activities.
• To ensure that your work is carried out to the highest safety and technical standards.
• To liaise with other business functions to ensure that project progress is maintained.
• To ensure the work is carried out following the business processes, to the highest standards of Health and Safety
• Build and develop a network of contacts to enable the development your personal capabilities.

Your competencies, skills and qualifications
Essential
• Degree or BTEC (HNC) in a science-based discipline (chemistry is preferred).
• Available for immediate start
• Ability to work in a team and to work independently when required.
• Capable of producing high quality technical reports.
• Strong IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft office suite.
• Strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate effectively with all areas of the organisation, e.g. those from a technical / non-technical and those from an assurance / delivery background.

Desirable
• Practical knowledge of chemistry and/or explosives processing
• Able to operate complex equipment (initially under training)
• Working knowledge of Risk Management
• Current valid UK Security Clearance to SC level or higher
• Willing to work overtime if needed to support programmed work.
