Under close supervision, perform a wide range of machining operations using lathes, drills, saws, and grinders to complete casting parts following standards methods and procedures.
• Work safely under functional safety guidelines such as PPE and equipment interaction.
• Reads and accurately follows technique card instructions, which describes numerous unique steps of a complex nature; plans the methods for completing a given assignment.
• Work from route cards, blueprints and/or supplied instructions to setup and operate machinery to perform a wide range of generally repetitive machining operations on product castings. Speeds, feeds, tooling, and operation sequence generally specified, but vary within limits as necessary to obtain required finish and tolerances. Exercise care in clamping and operating to avoid distortion, springing or breakage. Align and level machine tools and equipment to required accuracy and check to insure effective operation. Replace defective or damaged tooling as necessary.
• Check completed parts to ensure compliance with specifications.
• Detect and report defective materials, improper operations, and unusual conditions to proper supervision.
• Follows all established housekeeping and safety practices to maintain the quality of the work environment.
• Performs other duties of equal, greater, or lesser complexity as required by the position or as assigned by supervision.
• Requires the ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions normally acquired by completion of high school of GED.
• Use shop mathematics, charts, tables, formulae. Work from complex drawings, sketches, samples. Knowledge of machine tool setup, and operation material characteristics. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years of applied trades training.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, read, follows and interprets instructions on technique cards, code sheets as well as other verbal or written instructions.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, pull 15-20 pounds frequently and 35 pounds occasionally.
• Light physical effort handling parts and materials, setting up machines. Time spent in observation, checking. Equivalent to frequently exerting light effort, some average or heavy effort involved.
• Continuous mental or visual attention while performing carrying machine and hand operations, some close attention to maintain critical tolerances, make close setups.
• Ability to read precision measuring instruments.
• Ability to read shop production blueprints.
• Mechanical aptitude and strong attention to detail.
• Sincere desire to learn and broaden their knowledge base thereby increasing their value to the company.
• Focus on results, timely completion and quality; Attention to detail and accuracy – precision oriented.
• Prior experience in an industrial manufacturing setting is desirable. Some prior shop experience preferred in order to understand shop practices and procedures.
• Demonstrated high degree of visual acuity and manual dexterity and inspection experience.
• Machine shop/general mechanical experience and/or OJT.
