BAE Systems is hiring Outside Machinists to support the Norfolk Ship Repair facility.

The Outside Machinist Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving deck machinery, engine room work, general dock, rudders, shafting, propeller work, and testing. The Mechanic will have general knowledge of equipment operation for assembly, installation and testing; records work performed and follows specified safety policies and procedures.

This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of mechanic in the Outside Machinist shop. A mechanic must demonstrate a developing knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.
Developing knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them with minimal assistance. This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. In some cases, as specified, the third class mechanic is expected to assist, rather than completing the task independently.
  • General Machinist Knowledge
    • Use of measuring devices (rulers, micrometers, dial indicators, depth mics, scales, etc.)
    • Use of trade hand tools
    • Use of power tools (electric drills, saws, grinders, drill presses, etc.)
  • Blueprints
    • Read basic blueprints
  • Customer Equipment
    • Care and protection of customer equipment to include wrapping and protection equipment with various materials (wood, plastic, rubber, etc.)
  • Stationary and Portable Power Tool Operation (1 of the following)
    • Electrical
    • Pneumatic
    • Hydraulic
  • Valve Overhaul
    • Identify the different types of valves to include safety valves, globe valves, gate valves, etc.
    • Learning about the applications of different valve types and understand what systems it is defined for
    • Understand the operation valves
    • Assist with removal and replacement
    • Assist with repairing and general overhaul
  • Reach Rods/ Valve Operators
    • Learning about the different types of rods and valve operators
    • Understand the different parts to include rods, universal joint, hand wheels, etc.
    • Understand the different types and usage of reach rods and valve operators
    • Assist with setting reach rods and valve operators up for operation
  • Pump Overhaul
    • Learning about pump overhauls and parts
    • Assist with the removal and installation
  • Pump Alignments
    • Basic knowledge about the alignment process to include one of the following:
      • Face and rim
      • Indicator Revers method
      • Magnetic coupling
      • laser
  • Deck Machinery
    • Basic knowledge about the application and parts of the following types of deck machinery:
      • Anchor Windlass
      • Sliding Pad Eye
      • Boat Davit
      • Capstans
    • Assist with repair, cleaning, removal, and installation of deck machinery
  • Rudders
    • Work with rudders and how they operate
    • Understand rudder parts
    • Assist with rudder removal and installation
  • Shafting
    • Know parts of a shaft (liners, journals, etc.)
    • Assist with the removal, installation and repairs of the shaft
  • Line Shaft Bearings
    • Knowledge of line shaft bearings
    • Assist with the removal, repair and installation of line shaft bearings
  • Propellers
    • Know the differences between the types of propellers (Fixed and Variable Pitched)
    • Knowledgeable regarding the parts of a propeller
    • Repair, removal, installation and testing of propellers
  • Controllable Pitch Propeller Systems
    • Becoming familiar with the systems operations and parts
    • Assist with repair, installation and testing


Job Requirements:
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
Education Minimum: High School Diploma/GED
Minimum Relevant Experience: 2 to 3 yrs.

Practical Theory Requirements

A mechanic must demonstrate knowledge of job planning and executing, proper tool selection, assisting helpers and handypersons with minimal supervision.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
  • Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
Must be able to wear applicable PPE (Hard hat, safety goggles, gloves, steel toes shoes, ear protection)

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
Education Preferred: High School Diploma/GED
Preferred Relevant Experience: 3 to 5 yrs.

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Trained in all annual NAVSEA Standard Items (preferred)
General Knowledge of Ship Systems preferred
  • Distilling Plants
  • Steam Plant
  • Diesel Plant
  • Hydraulics systems
Understanding of naval vessel compartments, number systems and related vessel terminology for the CG, DDG, and LHD ships preferred.

Pay Information
This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which will determine your wages.
