TASK DESCRIPTION:
Aircraft Mechanic II (23022):
Aircraft Mechanics II must have a combination of experience to repair engines, sheet metal, and structural, hydraulic, electrical, power train and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty, required to meet the assigned missions. Additionally provides input to Maintenance Engineering Changes (MEC), Estimated Cost of Damage preparation (ECOD) and assist in the recommendation of changes to (MWO). Individuals must be able to prioritize workloads and are required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks. Mechanic IIs can inspect Mechanic IIs and Is. This mechanic maintains repairs and modifies aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty, maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components, applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions and applies required expertise in restoring equipment condition and or operation, and applies comprehensive technical expertise to solve moderate to complex problems by interpreting technical documentation such as blueprints or manufactures’ manuals. Must have a thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts, requires broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair, must have basic knowledge of electrical theory, must have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers. This job requires working knowledge of technical publications. The incumbent receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician, will occasionally be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks, and may be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records. Must be able to prioritize workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects. May require specialization in sheet-metal, electric work, avionics or other aircraft systems related disciplines.
Additional Qualifications:
To include the Basic A.23 description, the Aircraft Mechanic II (Machinist/Welder) must have working knowledge of aircraft machining/welding repair with a minimum of two (2) years of experience. Skill level 5 as an aircraft machinist/welder or equivalent is required. Machinist/Welder produces replacement and new parts and tools in making repairs of jet engines and associated mechanical equipment. Designs, welds, heat treats, repairs, fabricates, and machines precision tools, components, and assemblies for aerospace weapon systems and related support equipment (SE). Advises on metals machining, welding, designing, and production problems. Designs, manufactures, or modifies special precision tools, gauges, dies, and fixtures to facilitate metal working operations. Interprets blueprints and shop drawings. Performs metals technology shop calculations such as determining cutting speeds and settings, material requirements, welding processes, and pre-heat and post-heat treatment requirements. Welds, brazes, solders, and heat treats metals. Uses manual and computer numerical controlled (CNC) metal working machines such as mills, lathes, hydraulic presses, drill presses, and saws to manufacture and repair parts; and special tools for aircraft and engine components and support equipment (SE). Utilizes equipment accessories such as boring heads, indexing heads, rotary tables, tool post grinders and taper attachments. May write programs for CNC machines using manual data input (MDI) and Computer Aided Design-Computer Aided Manufacturing (CADCAM) methods. Checks completed components and determines serviceability in accordance with drawings and specifications. Disassembles, assembles, and fits component parts using machine screws, bolts, press fits, and welding techniques. Uses metal working equipment, tools, and supplies to produce surface finishing specifications for components. Extracts broken or damaged hardware. Checks components for wear tolerances using measuring devices. Inspects and maintains hand tools and metal working machinery. Performs operator maintenance and service inspections on shop equipment and tools. Interprets technical publications, blueprints, and drawings to resolve problems related to aircraft systems and support equipment.
Must possess knowledge of:
metal repair and fabrication processes; composition of metals and machinable materials; weld specifications; metal heat treatment; blueprints and drawings; use of precision measuring devices and tools; fabrication using oxyacetylene, metallic arc, and inert gas shielded arc; operation and capacity of metal working and welding equipment; use and fabrication of layout tools and fixture devices; safety codes, and practices regarding equipment and supplies; hazards of explosive and compressed gasses; hazardous rays and fumes; and proper handling, use, and disposal of hazardous waste and materials. Responsible for the shaping of metal parts to close tolerances, making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining; knowledge of the working properties of the common metals, selecting standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment. Constructs and repairs jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material (e.g., plastic, plaster, rubber, glass). Work typically involves:
planning and laying out work according to models, blueprints, drawings, or other written or oral specifications, understanding the working properties of common metals and alloys, selecting appropriate materials, tools, and processes required to complete task, making necessary shop computations, and setting up and operating various machine tools and related equipment. Performs welding on aircraft ground support equipment.
Task Requirements:
- Performs aircraft maintenance functions of the Corrosion Control.
- Performs inspection, disassembly, repair, servicing, TD compliance, modification, assembly, surface finish removal, corrosion control, preservation/de-preservation services
- Aircraft maintenance action documentation via logs, records, forms, and electronic means
- Troubleshoot malfunctions.
- Use hand tools, power tools, machines, specific and general aviation test measurement and diagnostic equipment, and sets kits and outfits (SKO).
- Read and interpret manufacturers maintenance manuals, military technical manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, blueprints, manufacturers’ drawings, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components
- Perform general housekeeping and organization of workstation(s), shop(s), maintenance facility to provide a clean, safe, and FOD free environment
- Perform shift work and/or overtime as required
- Other duties and tasks assigned.
Preferred Personnel Qualifications:
- 10 years or more of Organizational, Intermediate and/or Depot level maintenance
Basic Personnel Qualifications:
- Attended Aviation Machinist/Welding School or equivalent.
- Five years’ experience in aviation maintenance
- Must meet security requirements for installation, facility and network access
- Must qualify for and shall possess a Common Access Card (CAC)
- Must be able to climb ladders and raised platforms
- Must be able to use hand and power tools
- Must have dexterity to handle small parts
Compensation
$41.84/hour
Other Compensation
Employees receive a health and welfare benefit of $3.65 per hour paid up to 40 hours per week.
