Job Description

The Electrical Assembly Technician builds, wires, tests, and troubleshoots marine-grade power distribution units and electrical control panels used in vessels and offshore systems. This role ensures that all assemblies comply with marine electrical standards, classification society requirements, and internal quality specifications while working with a variety of low-, medium-, and high-voltage configurations.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble electrical panels, power distribution units, and control cabinets according to engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Build, wire, and test marine-grade power distribution units and electrical control panels for use in vessels and offshore systems.
  • Route, terminate, and label wiring harnesses, cables, and components in accordance with marine electrical standards.
  • Install breakers, contactors, relays, busbars, terminal blocks, meters, and protective devices within electrical panels and switchboards.
  • Perform crimping, soldering, ferruling, and cable dressing to professional marine-grade standards.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, bills of materials (BOMs), and layout drawings to ensure accurate assembly.
  • Identify component specifications and verify correct installation according to design and engineering requirements.
  • Build and configure 60 Hz, 400 Hz, and DC power panels in alignment with applicable technical specifications and standards.
  • Assist in the assembly of 450 V low-voltage switchboards and load centers, as well as 4160 V medium-voltage shock-isolated switchboards with protective relaying and SCADA systems.
  • Support the assembly of high-capacity DC switchboards up to 900 VDC at 6000 A, following defined performance requirements.
  • Troubleshoot wiring, components, and panel assemblies to resolve issues discovered during testing or inspection.
  • Provide feedback to engineering teams on design improvements and manufacturability enhancements based on hands-on assembly experience.
  • Participate in weld tests such as standard joint uphill plate tests, 3G bi-metal tests, and D1.1 standard aluminum plate tests when required to support production quality.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in electrical assembly of panels, power distribution units, and control cabinets.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, single-line diagrams, and layout drawings.
  • Hands-on experience with panel wiring, electrical wiring, and wire assembly in a production or manufacturing environment.
  • Skilled in using hand tools and power tools for electrical and mechanical assembly tasks.
  • Experience with crimping, soldering, ferruling, and cable dressing to a professional standard.
  • Capability to install breakers, contactors, relays, busbars, terminal blocks, meters, and protective devices.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical assemblies, wiring issues, and component-level problems.
  • Mechanical assembly skills to support integration of electrical components into enclosures and structures.
  • Ability to work with marine electrical standards and requirements for naval or offshore systems.
  • Competence in reading and applying bills of materials (BOMs) during assembly.
  • Familiarity with switchboards and load centers designed and qualified to applicable technical performance requirements.
  • Ability to perform or support weld tests such as standard joint uphill plate tests, 3G bi-metal tests, and D1.1 standard aluminum plate tests as part of quality processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with naval or Department of Defense (DoD) systems and specifications.
  • Experience in assembling ruggedized, shock-isolated switchboards and load centers.
  • Exposure to protective relaying and SCADA systems for medium-voltage applications.
  • Experience working with 60 Hz, 400 Hz, and DC power panels in industrial or marine environments.
  • Familiarity with high-capacity DC switchboards up to 900 VDC at 6000 A.
  • Knowledge of marine-grade standards for wiring, labeling, and cable management.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering teams and provide constructive feedback on design and manufacturability.
  • Comfort working with both electrical and mechanical documentation, including technical specifications and performance requirements.
