Job Title: Fuel Cell Mechanic
Job Description
This role focuses on the removal, installation, inspection, and repair of aircraft fuel cells, bladders, and associated fuel system components. You work from technical drawings, specifications, and written instructions to ensure fuel systems are assembled, tested, and maintained to exacting standards. The position involves diagnosing leaks, identifying structural or sealing deficiencies, and recommending corrective actions while maintaining high levels of safety, quality, and schedule adherence.
Responsibilities
- Remove, install, and inspect aircraft fuel cells, bladders, fuel lines, hardware, and fittings on various aircraft in accordance with established procedures.
- Analyze aircraft sealing, structural, and assembly drawings to identify seal-level deficiencies and potential issues.
- Diagnose results of fuel system leak tests to detect drawing, specification, structural, and assembly sealing errors.
- Recommend and support corrective actions to address fuel system deficiencies and ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
- Perform disassembly and teardown operations on aircraft fuel systems and related components as required.
- Remove fuel cells and components from aircraft using specified procedures and techniques to prevent damage and ensure safety.
- Prepare cavities for installation of fuel cells and components, including inspection and cleaning of internal fittings and structures.
- Install fuel cells and components following detailed procedures, ensuring proper fit, sealing, and alignment.
- Use appropriate pressure test equipment to perform leak checks and make repairs as required to restore system integrity.
- Check the condition of fuel cells for damage and inspect cavities and internal fittings for wear, corrosion, or defects.
- Work from operation sheets, diagrams, blueprints, engineering orders, military specifications, and verbal instructions to complete assignments accurately.
- Perform assembly and disassembly operations on aircraft fuel systems and equipment in accordance with Department of Defense, manufacturer, company, supplier, and other directives.
- Conduct operational checks of aircraft fuel systems and components with or without production aids to verify correct function.
- Assemble and test articles for use in system testing, development, and modification of aircraft fuel systems.
- Maintain production schedules and quality standards by planning work, monitoring progress, and ensuring tasks are completed on time.
- Inspect completed work for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards and procedures.
- Notify supervision of any malfunctions, defects, or damage to equipment, materials, or products encountered during work.
- Keep the work area clean, orderly, and compliant with safety and tool-control requirements.
- Assist other aircraft mechanics and support related tasks in other fields as necessary to complete assignments.
- Order parts, pan stock, tools, materials, and equipment as required to support ongoing maintenance and repair activities.
- Comply with all rules and regulations concerning health and safety, tool control, contracts, facilities, and other relevant policies.
- Fuel and defuel aircraft, perform pencil drains, and conduct leak checks on fuel systems in accordance with established procedures.
- Remove and install equipment and components using blueprints with firm callouts, including butt, center, chord, station, and water lines to ensure precise positioning.
- Identify different types of corrosion on fuel system components, clean affected areas, and treat corrosion in line with applicable standards.
- Clearly document maintenance and repair actions, equipment status tags, logs, and parts requests to maintain accurate records.
- Perform assigned duties on all shifts and in varying physical locations and conditions, including confined spaces, while wearing required safety equipment.
Essential Skills
- 2 to 4 years of experience performing duties related to aircraft fuel systems, fuel cells, and fuel components overhaul.
- Hands-on experience as a fuel cell mechanic working with aircraft fuel systems and components.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, assembly drawings, process specifications, technical manuals, written instructions, and test procedures.
- Proficiency in using a variety of precision measuring instruments, such as torque wrenches, gauges, and measuring devices.
- Ability to work effectively with hand tools and pneumatic tools for assembly, disassembly, and repair tasks.
- Experience operating ground support equipment such as hydraulic test carts, nitrogen/oxygen carts, tow tractors, and hangar deck cranes.
- Capability to fuel and defuel aircraft, perform pencil drains, and conduct leak checks on fuel systems safely and accurately.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and adapt to physically demanding tasks in tight or restricted areas.
- Knowledge of shop mathematics, assembly methods, and standard shop practices applicable to aircraft maintenance.
- Ability to work from drawings, sketches, sample parts, position templates, and other complete or incomplete technical information.
- Strong oral and written communication skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to clearly document maintenance and repair actions, equipment status tags, logs, and parts requests.
- Ability to perform assigned duties while wearing required safety equipment and personal protective gear.
- Ability to perform duties on all shifts and under varying weather and physical conditions without encumbrances.
- Commitment to comply with all health and safety, tool control, contracts, and facility regulations.

Work Environment
This position operates in an open-bay, non-climate-controlled hangar environment where you work directly on aircraft and fuel systems. You perform duties on first shift (Monday–Friday, approximately 5:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) or second shift (Monday–Friday, approximately 2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m.), with optional overtime as business needs require. You must remain open to working any shift. The work involves frequent use of hand and pneumatic tools, precision measuring instruments, and ground support equipment such as hydraulic test carts, nitrogen/oxygen carts, tow tractors, and hangar deck cranes. Tasks may require working in confined spaces, at various heights, and in different physical locations within the facility. You wear required safety equipment and personal protective gear while performing all duties. The environment emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and adherence to tool-control and safety procedures. You may expense up to a specified amount per year for steel-toed shoes as part of the required work attire.
