Mission of the Job

The role of Head of Mechanical & Thermal Design team involves the technical coordination of the team in order to lead or support the mechanical and thermal design along with test/qualification of satellite on-board and ground equipment, RF systems and fixed or mobile antennas

Main activities

As technical coordinator of Mechanical & Thermal Design team working on the mechanical and thermal design, analysis and development of high precision and complex units for extreme environment, particularly in the area of space applications, the primary tasks and activities will include:

  • Identification of system concepts and technical requirements to comply with the mission statement, taking into account the technical and programmatic constraints identified by the project initiator and top level customer
  • General layout definition by concurrent engineering in terms of configurations, materials, off-the-shelf components, etc.
  • Execution of structural (essential) and thermal (desirable) analyses
  • Base mechanical and/or thermal trade-offs
  • Preparation of contractual documentation for the relevant milestones (technical reports, presentations, drawings, technical budgets, etc.) and participation to program reviews with customers and/or suppliers
  • Critical assessment of mechanical drawings of assemblies and parts
  • In collaboration with other disciplines (RF, quality, technology), selection and detailed definition of the most appropriate manufacturing processes and procedures to be followed for the development of space qualified RF components
  • Support to implementation of components purchase and development plan
  • Consolidated experience on testing/qualification capabilities and procedures
  • Support to the preparation of proposals for industrial and R&D activities

Education/Training:

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, achieved with top score within maximum 6 years study course

Experience:

  • Essential: At least 10 (15 desirable) years of work experience on mechanical design, analysis and development of high precision and complex units for extreme environment
  • Desirable: Previous work experience on thermal design, analysis and development of high precision and complex units for extreme environment
  • Desirable: Previous employment in space industry design department with responsibility in thermo-mechanical design, analysis and development of satellite components
  • Desirable: Previous experience on team leading
  • Extensive experience in thermo-structural design of units and components supported by hand calculations and FEM analyses
  • 3D CAD solid modelling to support conceptual design
  • Concurrent engineering of configurations, materials, thermal-mechanical trade-offs, off-the-shelf components, etc.
  • Development and qualification activities management (planning, milestones keeping, meetings participation)
  • Development and qualification test activities (mechanical and thermal environments loads)
  • Preparation of technical reports, participation to meetings
  • Tool or product requirements:

  • Use of standard methods for design of mechanical assemblies and components
  • FEM analyses: linear, non-linear, thermal stress, dynamic
  • Excellent knowledge of CAE tools: MSC Patran/Nastran, Siemens NX CAE/Simcenter, Altair Hypermesh/Hyperworks
  • Excellent use of office automation software (MS office)
  • Pragmatic and product/results oriented approach

Languages:

  • Italian (fluent in technical and non-technical, written and spoken)
  • English (fluent in technical and non-technical, written and spoken
