Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Lead Engineer - Mechanical Systems is to create rotating machinery concept designs, develop and deliver new test rigs, and execute testing to validate new mechanical solutions for the aerospace propulsion industry. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Work with facilities and/or external suppliers to ensure auxiliary test equipment and facility capabilities are in place to meet test objectives
  • Define instrumentation and data acquisition systems capable of meeting test objectives
  • Prepare and participate in project and technical reviews
  • Develop and mature design or analysis tools for advanced mechanical systems
  • Provide expert consultation to help resolve technical challenges across the organization
  • Collaborate in the development of project proposals for initiatives targeting internal company funding and external government funding
  • Protect intellectual property through the generation of patents
  • Provide technical guidance and direction across the group to grow overall technical capability and product knowledge in technical focus areas
  • Provide technical development across the organization through effective coaching/mentoring
  • Foster a multidisciplinary, collaborative, and inclusive team environment

Required Qualifications

This Lead Engineer - Mechanical Systems role requires a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics in rotating machinery and/or rotating components design with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience, or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics in rotating machinery and/or rotating components design and a minimum of 6 years of industrial experience. Additionally, the role requires:

  • Experience with the design, manufacturing, assembly, and operation of custom test rigs for rotating machinery (e.g., shafts, bearings, dampers, couplings, seals, gears, etc.)
  • Experience with the complete design process, including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, validation, and product implementation
  • Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques and material processing selections for turbomachinery and electrical machines
  • Proficiency using 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, Creo)
  • Analytical experience, including computational fluid dynamics and/or structural/thermal finite element analysis with ANSYS
  • Results-oriented execution mindset with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet aggressive deadlines
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a global team environment

Desired Characteristics

This role needs an individual who is self-driven, motivated, and willing to take an idea from proposal to product! Additional characteristics being sought include:

  • Extensive testing of rotating components, data acquisition, data reduction, and design validation. Proficiency using ADRE and LMS data acquisition and reduction systems.
  • Experience in system modeling: coupling of fluid, thermal, and structural analyses
  • Experienced with rotor support design, rotor dynamics, and rigid body dynamics

The base pay range for this position is $90,000 - $175,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on April 16, 2024
