Job Title: Maintenance Technician – Drone Flight Operations
Job DescriptionThe Maintenance Technician supports flight operations by maintaining and troubleshooting drone body structures, mechanisms, and ground equipment, assembling and testing prototype vehicle components, and executing reliability and certification tests. You will work hands-on with electromechanical systems, follow and improve technical documentation, and collaborate closely with engineering to ensure safe, reliable, and optimized daily flight operations.
Responsibilities
- Maintain the existing fleet of aircraft and ground equipment, ensuring drones and support systems remain safe, reliable, and ready for daily operations.
- Maintain and support new systems built for function-specific flight tests, including prototype components and test articles.
- Build and assemble vehicle components, including electronics, drop door hatches, body structures, and fuselages, using instructions that may vary in quality and completeness.
- Troubleshoot and replace vehicle parts following technical instructions, documenting the work performed and reporting findings to the engineering and flight operations teams.
- Verify that test specifications are accurate, feasible, and executable with the available resources and equipment.
- Create test setups that match engineering specifications, including interpreting test procedures and diagrams, setting up instrumentation, configuring data acquisition, and performing test article diagnostics.
- Perform front-line root cause analysis on issues identified during testing or operations and communicate findings clearly to the team.
- Run tests to validate system improvements, new technologies, and new processes for performance and design validation.
- Conduct tests and demonstrations that support regulatory type certification activities, including those related to US FAA Type Certification.
- Accurately report test incidents and results in clear, layperson-friendly language, ensuring that both technical and non-technical stakeholders can understand outcomes.
- Execute reliability tests on drone body parts, mechanisms, and related systems, and provide structured feedback to improve design and durability.
- Use hand and power tools, including manual mills, bandsaws, torque drivers, wrenches, drills, and measurement tools, to build, modify, and repair components.
- Use test equipment such as oscilloscopes and other diagnostic tools to test circuits, sensors, and electromechanical systems.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical instructions to perform builds, maintenance, and tests consistently and safely.
- Organize and document test data in a clear and accessible format so that engineering teams can easily analyze results.
- Collaborate with engineering to refine test methods, improve instructions, and enhance reliability and maintainability of systems.
- Identify what needs to be done in a dynamic environment, take ownership of tasks, and complete them with minimal oversight.
- Support extended daily flight operations with vigilance, maintaining a strong focus on safety and continuous optimization.
- Travel in field service vehicles (such as sprinter vans) to perform maintenance and troubleshooting on drones and related equipment in the field.
- Work primarily outdoors in an open-air hangar environment, actively participating in hands-on operations for the majority of the workday.
- Demonstrate meticulous attention to process, documentation, and safety practices, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
Essential Skills- Hands-on troubleshooting experience with electromechanical systems, including build and repair of mechanical and electrical components.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
- Experience with testing circuits and creating and executing test builds for electromechanical systems.
- Proficiency using hand and power tools such as manual mills, bandsaws, screwdrivers, wrenches, torque drivers, drills, calipers, and other measurement tools.
- Soldering skills for assembly and repair of electronic components and wiring.
- Ability to read and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical instructions accurately.
- Strong troubleshooting skills down to the component level, with sound judgment and proactive problem-solving.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting data, incidents, and findings to engineering and operations teams.
- Ability to organize data and test results in a clear, logical, and easy-to-understand format.
- High attention to detail and a meticulous, process-oriented working style.
- Comfort asking questions and seeking clarification when requirements or instructions are incomplete or ambiguous.
- Physical ability to regularly lift objects up to 25 kg.
- Comfort working outdoors and in an open-air hangar environment for the majority of the workday.
- Flexibility to work a variety of schedules, including day, swing, night, weekend, and rotational shifts, based on operational needs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience in commercial aviation or aviation maintenance; prior exposure to aircraft systems is highly beneficial.
- Experience with avionics systems, avionics repair, and avionics troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), such as drones or remote-controlled aircraft, whether through professional or hobbyist experience.
- Prior flight test experience or participation in test and reliability environments (production test and reliability backgrounds are well-suited).
- Experience working with structures, mechanisms, and mechanical integrations.
- Familiarity with 80/20 builds and modular mechanical framing systems.
- Experience with electronics, mechanical repair, and integration of electromechanical systems.
- Comfort using oscilloscopes and other electronic test equipment; ability to learn proprietary sensor-testing software.
- Ability to work autonomously in a dynamic, unpredictable environment and identify tasks without extensive oversight.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and lead by example in day-to-day operations.
- Strong written communication skills for clear documentation of failures, progress, and test outcomes.
- Enthusiasm for working in the field with hardware and software in action rather than in a purely desk-based role.
Why Work Here? You will join a mission-driven organization focused on building a logistics system that serves people equitably and addresses some of the world’s most urgent and complex access challenges. The team leverages advanced robotics and autonomy to design, manufacture, and operate one of the largest automated delivery systems in the world, serving tens of millions of people and contributing to a more resilient global supply chain. You will work alongside dedicated colleagues who value collaboration, continuous improvement, and initiative, in an environment where your hands-on contributions have visible, real-world impact.
Work Environment
This role is primarily based in an open-air hangar located in the rugged foothills of Northern California, with approximately 85 of the day spent working outdoors and directly with hardware. The environment is dynamic, field-oriented, and highly hands-on, involving daily interaction with drones, ground support equipment, and test setups. You will work with a wide range of tools and technologies, including hand tools, power tools (manual mills, bandsaws, drills, torque drivers, wrenches), measurement tools (calipers and related instruments), oscilloscopes, and proprietary software used to test sensors and other onboard systems. The work is rooted in production test and reliability activities, with frequent setup and execution of tests on drone body parts and mechanisms to validate performance and durability. Schedules can vary according to operational needs, and you should be prepared for day, swing, night, weekend, and rotational shifts, as well as occasional travel in field service vehicles such as sprinter vans to perform maintenance and troubleshooting in the field. The setting emphasizes safety, vigilance during extended flight operations, and practical attire suitable for an outdoor, shop, and hangar-based technical environment.
