The Staff Engineer – Competitive Assessment Mechanical Design constructs models of non-GE engines to support GE’s assessment competitor products. This role will focus on competitors to our existing and next generation product lines to help GE retain its competitive position. Responsibilities include gathering information from publicly available sources, turbomachinery layout, weight/cost estimation, and comparison to GE engines. They will lead multi-functional and global teams to understand competitor engines and provide guidance to GE’s design teams to improve our own designs. Additionally, the Staff Engineer will support reviews given to senior leadership to guide product strategy decisions.

Essential Responsibilities

In the role of Staff Engineer – Competitive Assessment Mechanical Design, you will integrate and develop processes that meet business needs across the organization, manage complex issues within functional area(s) of expertise, be involved in long-term planning, and contribute to the overall business strategy.  This will include generation of competitive assessments for non-GE engines, coordination with new and established programs, and communication to business leadership. 

Additionally, in the role of Staff Engineer – Competitive Assessment Mechanical Design, your responsibilities will include:

  • Gather publicly available information about non-GE engines.
  • Generate cross-sections, weight & cost assessments, and maintenance strategy for non-GE engines
  • Utilize business acumen to identify key attributes of competitor engines and support evaluation of the business case.
  • Support communication to senior leadership to drive business decisions.
  • Coordinate with our broad global team to understand and evaluate non-GE engines.
  • Lead cross-section development for competitive engine models, including weight, product cost & life-cycle cost roll ups, and technology assessments.
  • Lead preliminary design of modules and systems to find optimal solutions at the engine level.  
  • Lead durability, weight, and cost reviews of non-GE engines including comparisons to GE’s current and future engines.
  • Establish new Competitive Assessment processes and standard work to ensure efficient and repeatable deliverables.

  • Identify new inventions and prepare disclosures to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage, as well as protecting the intellectual property rights of the company.
  • Execute with guidance the analysis / evaluation of assigned projects that meet business standards, practices and procedures and the product / program requirements.
  • Recommend approach to meet the technical and program requirements.
  • Formulate and implement plans to achieve technical requirements, schedules and contract commitments.
  • Develop action plans to anticipate and respond to problems.
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and / or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments.
  • Lead or participate in organizational efforts in assigned projects and / or tasks.
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineer or similar field from an accredited University or College.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in turbomachinery mechanical design.

Desired Characteristics

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 8 years of experience in a mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Experience estimating weight, product cost, maintenance cost, and design parameters early in engine development programs.
  • Experience with Unigraphics NX or similar CAD software.
  • Exposure to compressor or turbine aerodynamics.
  • Exposure to engine cycle & performance.
  • Exposure to non-GE engines or turbomachinery.
  • Prior experience leading global cross-functional teams.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to guide and influence others. 
  • Exposure to commercial and military design requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to document, plan, market and manage programs that further the knowledge, understanding and capability of the business.
  • Problem analysis and resolution skills.
  • Systems level thinking, incorporating understanding of the overall engine to influence mechanical design.
