Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Turbine/Mechanical Design Engineer Level 2/3 for the development and ongoing support of new and existing designs used in surface ship and submarine propulsion and power generation systems for the US Navy based out of Sunnyvale, CA. The prospective candidate will work with a group of incredible people with backgrounds in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerothermal, Acoustics, Structural and Systems Engineers. The prospective candidate researches, develops, designs, and test components, equipment, and systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Our Sunnyvale site specializes in the development, manufacture, assembly and testing of propulsion and power generation systems for naval surface ships and submarines. The candidate selected will apply their skills to support current and future Navy Power & Propulsion Turbomachinery development.
- Primary focus will be the design of propulsion and power generation turbines and the associated components including structures, blades, diaphragms, valves, and actuators.
- Secondary focus will be the design of variety of supporting hardware associated with propulsion and power generation turbines such as bearings, couplings, pipping, auxiliary support systems, and packaging.
- Participate in the resolution of technical and complex issues related to hardware.
- Participate in the generation and revision of engineering drawings, reports, and procedures.
- Interface directly with customer and management to status activities.
- Coordinate planning and scheduling of major activities.
- Occasional domestic travel will be required.
This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below:
Basic Qualifications for Level 2:
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 2 years related experience; or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with no related experience.
- Demonstrated experience with task planning and execution to meet schedule requirements.
- Ability to work independently on projects with minimal lead or management oversight.
- US Citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Clearance.
Basic Qualifications for Level 3:
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 5 years related experience; or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 3 years related experience. or PhD in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with no related experience.
- Demonstrated experience with task planning and execution to meet schedule requirements.
- Ability to work independently on projects with minimal lead or management oversight.
- US Citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient with CAD modeling (NX, CREO, SolidWorks, or equivalent)
- Proficient in ASME Y14.5 and ASME Y14.100 Dimensioning, Tolerancing, and Engineering Drawing Practices
- Masters degree or higher in Aerospace, Mechanical, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Experience in developing design concepts, performing trade studies, and conducting evaluations and analyses
- Strong background in machine design, strength of materials, and materials technology
- Experience in executing projects in cross-functional matrix organization with other engineering disciplines
- Experience in technical presentation and interfacing with customers
- Experience in working with vendors and suppliers
- Willing to learn Acoustic Analysis, Structural Analysis, and/or Electromagnetic Design
- Active DOD Secret clearance
Primary Level Salary Range: $83,400.00 - $125,200.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $103,600.00 - $155,400.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
