Job Description:

The Blocker and Bracer Lead is the Subject Matter Expert in secures cargo in or aboard cargo carriers such as trucks, vans, trailers, railroad cars, sea vans, barges and ships to prevent damage during its transportation, determines appropriate lumber size and kind and prepares the lumber required for braces, chocks, blocks, beams, planking, cribbing, skids, cradles, saddles, etc., using hand and power tools. This worker nails, spikes, bolts, or fastens with wood screws or lag screws supporting and bracing fixtures to secure cargo items, constructs weatherproof shelters over some types of deck loads, guys, lashes and binds heavy equipment to pad eyes, rings, eyelets, hooks, stanchions, cleats, or other supporting fixtures using chains, ropes, cable, wires or metal straps. This worker constructs temporary trestles, decking, bulkheads, cribbing and sheathing, and cuts dunnage to support, stiffen, or separate bulky or heavy cargo.  


Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading, assessing, and monitoring BBPCT section and employees; directs section employee workloads and ensures all service and support is executed and all performance standards are met. 
  • Possess, obtain, and maintain a DoD Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Certification; officially certify government HAZMAT freight shipments IAW CFR 49, Part 172, Subpart H (172.704), DOD 4500.0R, Chpt 204 and AFMAN 24-204. 
  • Must be able to complete the online WPM Area Coordinator certification course. 
  • Studies specifications and measures, spans and cuts boards using patterns templates, ruler, and pencil and hand and power saws. 
  • Fastens or installs parts using hammer, nailing machine or power stapler. 
  • Repairs defective containers by replacing damaged parts, and/or fabricate containers from wood and fiberboard including pallets, Dunn age and restraints. 
  • Inserts wood bracing’s, cardboard files and felt pads in containers. 
  • Builds crates around objects using ruler, hand tools and pneumatic nailer, and ensures items are properly preserved, packaged and do not require further protection before shipping. 
  • Fabricates repairs, modifies and replaces woodwork on vehicle sides and beds. 
  • Preserves items, as required, prior to packing. 
  • Packs, seals, bands and applies spanings to crates and containers. 
  • When required, package items in constructed boxes, crates, pallets, etc. 
  • Inspects commercial furnished railcars for serviceability and complement of equipment necessary for loading. 
  • Assists and directs the tie down of Military Vehicles/equipment and Milvans loaded onto railcars. Assures all is tied down, blocked and/or braced IAW Military and Transporting railroad specifications. 
  • Prepares cargo for shipment, obtains GBL/CBL from outbound freight and loads freight on commercial conveyances. 
  • Monitors, directs and provides guidance to other Blocker/Bracers. 
  • Compiles all data reports required and requested as well as monthly CDRL’s. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  •  High School graduate or equivalent.    
  • Must have a working knowledge of various power saws and basic woodworking principles.   
  • 2 -4 years woodworking experience and knowledge of packaging and preservation principles and techniques preferred.   
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping abilities, with excellent attention to detail. Demonstrates leadership, effective communication and teamwork skills in fast paced, high-volume operational environments. 
  • Working knowledge of the WPM program preferred, must be able to obtain the WPM Custodian Certification 
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a forklift license.   
  • Must have HAZMAT processing working knowledge and must be capable of obtaining Company/Government provided HAZMAT certification.  
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with proof of vehicle insurance. 
  • Must have a real ID  
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC) 
  • Must be able to obtain Tier1/ NACI (Public trust) background eligibility. 
  • Basic proficiency in the English language (reading and writing). 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook). 
  • Must be able to travel within the United States as required. This position requires travel up to 75 of the time 
  • Must receive a favorable background check and drug testing results. 
  • Employees may be required to perform other duties as assigned. 

Physical Demands & Working Environment: 

  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and perform routine standing, walking, bending, climbing, and reaching. 
  • Work performed in both warehouse and field environments, indoors and outdoors. 
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat or cold, high/low humidity, blowing sand or dust, confined spaces, heights, and inclement weather. 
  • Periodic overtime required, including nights, weekends, and holidays. 
  • Long, strenuous hours and ability to work under pressure. 
  • Frequent interaction with customers. 
  • Exposure to heat, cold, dust, and adverse weather conditions. 
  • Requires stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, and prolonged sitting. 
  • PPE required in designated areas (head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protection). 
  • Must comply with OSHA, EPA, fire regulations, and company safety rules. 

Material & Equipment Directly Used: 

  • PC and other office equipment, woodworking tools (saws, staples, hand tools, wrapping machine), forklift.
