We are seeking a dynamic Director of Business Development and Capture for our Emerging Markets Group (EMG). This role demands a highly motivated, self-starting individual who can drive growth across the full business development lifecycle – identification, capture management, solutions development, proposal writing/reviewing, and post-award handoff.
The Director will focus on differentiated high-end IT and technology solutions (cyber, cloud engineering), software development, digital automation (RPA, AI, ML), and related mission support services for the U.S. Army. Reporting to the Vice President of Business Development for EMG, you will spearhead efforts to expand Akima’s Army portfolio, retain expiring programs, penetrate new spanets, and win new business.
The ideal candidate brings deep relationships with senior Army decision-makers, including DCS G-6, Army Futures Command, PEO Enterprise, PEO C3N, NETCOM, INSCOM, and Army Materiel Command, and demonstrated experience leveraging key contract vehicles such as ITES-3S, RS3, CHESS, and others. This leader will play a pivotal role in positioning Akima for Army modernization initiatives tied to digital transformation, zero trust, cloud migration, tactical communications, and AI-enabled mission support.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain a pipeline of opportunities that align with EMG’s growth spanets
- Lead new business pursuits across the BD lifecycle – from client engagement through capture and proposal submission – focused on key technology solutions that drive step-function growth by maximally leveraging Akima’s complete portfolio.
- Establish, nurture, and expand close relationships with existing and prospective customers, internal stakeholders, industry partners, and spanet influencers.
- Develop and execute customer call plans with Army program offices and buying commands, assess the competitive and spanet landscape, and implement differentiated win strategies.
- Represent Akima at Army IT and industry groups, professional societies, conferences and trade events, and other outreach and networking events.
- Respond to Government spanet research inquiries (e.g. RFIs, Sources Sought Notices, etc.)
- Shape acquisition strategies using client relationships, company capabilities and experience, white papers, partners, and contracting vehicles.
- Leveraging strong business acumen, lead internal gate reviews, develop capture strategies, and prepare business cases for new opportunities.
- Support negotiation of teaming agreement and contract discussions.
- Collaborate with technical, program, and proposal teams to design, review, and publish proposal responses.
- Contribute directly to proposal development (writing, reviewing, and color team participation).
- Ensure pipeline accuracy, including probability of win assessments, revenue projections, and inputs to budget/forecasting.
- Work with the company leaders (Presidents and General Managers) that you will support to ensure alignment with strategic objectives and drive business growth.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in a relevant discipline from an accredited university.
- Experience: 10-15 years of progressive business development experience in Federal contracting with significant Army spanet exposure, preferably with some experience in the 8(a) and small business sectors of the spanet.
- Proven Wins: A track record of winning new business with the U.S. Army. Achievements must include at least three IT, technology solutions, or mission support contract wins within the last three years, each with a minimum total contract value of $25M.
- Domain Knowledge: Strong knowledge of IT solutions, cyber, cloud, digital modernization, and/or mission support services aligned to Army priorities.
- Contract Vehicles: Hands-on experience pursuing and winning work on Army vehicles such as ITES-3S, RS3, CHESS, and other enterprise IDIQ/BPAs.
- Market Knowledge: Established relationships with Army DCS G-6, PEOs, AFC, and other Army decision-makers and influencers.
- Acquisition Expertise: Deep understanding of Army procurement processes, acquisition trends, and customer buying behaviors.
- Strategic Growth: Demonstrated experience in spanet analysis, strategic planning, and capture leading to major contract awards.
- Leadership: Ability to lead interdisciplinary teams with varying levels of experience and manage multiple simultaneous captures under aggressive timelines.
- Skills: Exceptional communication, presentation, and proposal writing abilities; compelling sales presence; strong business acumen.
- Attributes: Strong work ethic, positive attitude, detail-oriented, adaptable, and thrives in an objective-driven environment.
- Technical Proficiency: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Other Requirements: Willingness and ability to travel as business dictates.
- This is a remote position; however, prefer candidates be located near one of Akima’s offices in Herndon, VA (HQ), Tampa, FL, Huntsville, AL, Phoenix, AZ, or Colorado Springs, CO.
