Air Canada, recognized as one of Canada’s top diversity employers and one of Montreal’s top employers, is seeking a Manager of Sustainable Procurement who will be based at our Montreal Headquarters.  

Sustainable Procurement is the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance criteria and CSR principles into traditional procurement processes and decisions. This role will report into the Centre of Excellence (COE) group within the Strategic Procurement (SP) organization.  

The role will require strong leadership, communications, and collaboration skills in order to position the airline as a leader in Sustainable Procurement.  

The successful candidate will apply a passion for Environmental, Governance and Social principles into shaping Procurement policies and process to include sustainability and promote Sustainable Procurement stewardship by maintaining strong relationships with multiple key stakeholders externally and internally (branches, industry associations, and others).  

Responsibilities:

The Manager, Sustainable Procurement, will lead a team responsible for developing, and implementing various initiatives including policies, process and programs to promote and drive best practices for Sustainable Procurement across all procurement categories at Air Canada. 

In greater detail, key areas of responsibility include the following: 

  • Lead the development and manage the implementation of the Sustainable Procurement Roadmap at Air Canada in order to meet corporate ESG objectives 
    • Lead initiatives that affect various phases of the procurement process such as creating tools that support ESG, and embedding ESG components into RFx   
    • Implement a sustainable procurement policy and determining data points for collection 
    • Consult and collaborate with relevant and impacted internal and external stakeholders in developing initiatives, programs and policy  
  • Champion Sustainable Procurement ESG mandates  
    • Develop and implement Best-In-Class programs that address specific ESG related topics such as the Scope 3 emissions, Supplier Diversity, Modern Slavery, Third Party Risk Management, Legal and Reputational Risk Management, and Supplier Code of Conduct. 
    • Lead and provide coaching to team members to advance and mature programs and current processes. (e.g. the Legal and Reputational Risk Management Process and Supplier Code of Conduct Exemption Process) 
    • Develop training material and collaborate with team members responsible for change management and training to sensitize employees to Sustainable Procurement 
    • Lead awareness campaigns about the programs to all internal stakeholders including Strategic Procurement and Corporate Real Estate, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion teams, and Global Sales. 
    • Lead growth and development of the program and suppliers eligible for RFx activities in collaboration with Canada’s leading sustainability certification associations 
    • Ensure due diligence and reputational risk assessments are performed on SP suppliers and results communicated to impacted stakeholders. 
    • Continuously lead the flagged supplier review process and ensure monitoring mechanisms are in placed Manage the monitoring of industry trends and emerging developments with regards to ESG and Sustainable Procurement 
  • Sustainable Procurement enablement at Air Canada  
    • Establish and operationalize KPIs for ESG mandates for corporate reporting, and drive initiatives to achieve agreed upon targets. 
    • Lead the configuration of reporting tools to report KPIs with the leads of systems and analytics. 
    • Guide internal stakeholders with external facing requests and inform about sustainable procurement mandates (example: tier 2 reporting, modern slavery reporting, diverse spend) 
    • Lead research analysis for program development and shares this knowledge with internal stakeholders. 
    • Lead process digitalization and automation, and continuous improvement initiatives  
  • Effectively manage team members and provide opportunity for growth  
    • Lead, team members to maximize efficiency and productivity, and ensure consistent high-quality and in-depth deliverables. 
    • Translate corporate goals into functional and individual goals 
    • Manage and monitor performance of team members through coaching and mentoring and initiate action plan to strengthen and accelerate learning curve. 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

Desired Skills & Experience 

In addition to a University degree in a relevant field of study, or education combined with professional experience, the successful candidate will demonstrate excellent analytical, communication (verbal and written), and project management skills plus the ability to multi-task, work under pressure, and accommodate changing priorities.  

A strong entrepreneurial spirit and desire to learn will also be essential. Strong organizational skills are essential and knowledge and understanding of ESG issues, ethics and compliance, policy development, program management, and procurement are essential. 

Due to the confidential nature of the work, a high degree of professionalism and discretion is required. Flexibility and willingness to work extended work hours may also be necessary.
