You will lead the Platform Hardware Electronic Design engineering organization, supporting the business in product development.

You will improve performance and processes, support projects to successfully execute product development, and lead achievement of key functional and business objectives.

This is a People Leader role for a team of roughly 12-15 experienced Electrical/Electronic design engineers that will require you to use you experience, knowledge, influence, and initiative to set strategy, manage team competency development, and drive engineering execution excellence.

The position supports all products areas and projects and includes interfaces with numerous outside organizations. You report directly to the Platform Hardware Engineering Leader with moderate autonomy and require high levels of operational judgment.

Technical Manager, Electronic Design Essential Responsibilities

The Electronic Design Technical Leader will:

  • Hold responsibility for delivering engineering excellence to effectively perform bids and proposals, manage projects, execute development and verification strategies, and conduct accurate engineering forecasts for the Platform Hardware Electronic Design skillset.

  • Support and conduct strategic resource planning, then build an inclusive, highly technical, and high-performing team through recruitment and competency development, guide them through hard times, and celebrate their successes.

  • Manage department sub-section to achieve functional, business, and broad company objectives including engineering planning and budgeting, culture development, and process and execution excellence.

  • Create and execute structured development plans customized for individual team members, including holding the team accountable for supporting development of others within the organization.

  • Set clear expectations for individual and team performance and manage/improve performance using controlled metrics and a continuous improvement mindset.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, clear communication, lean, and accountability through leading, motivating, and inspiring others.

  • Develop engineering competency that delivers results compliant with engineering processes and customer contractual requirements.

  • Allocate qualified engineering talent, manage outsource activities to satisfy project demands requiring the Electronic Design skillset.

  • Support reporting and escalation rhythms with clear communication and firm understanding of status, active ownership and management to resolve issues, and a focus on continuous improvement.

  • Provide technical expertise and leadership for the pursuit of new business, the execution of existing business (NPI and IR&D), and the continuous improvement of electronic design processes, tools, and talent.

  • Drive effective startup of new projects, focusing on strategic planning, standardization, reporting/monitoring expectation setting, and One Team collaboration.

  • Demonstrate superior technical expertise to translate highly technical engineering concepts into workable solutions, leveraging engineering and product reuse.

  • Demonstrate strong technical problem solving skills and assist in design problems in a hands-on and mentoring manner.

  • Hold project teams accountable to deliver quantifiable results against Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) expectations.

  • Assist project and program leadership in the timely resolution of engineering design, validation, integration, verification, safety, certification, closure, and other issues.

  • Develop influential relationships with assigned customers at all levels.

  • Provide specific engineering strategies, credibility, plans and actions that differentiate us from our competitors and make GE a great place to work both now and in the future.

  • Maintain high visibility as a key engineering leader in the Avionics business while being respected for maturity, professionalism, expertise, sound judgment, passion for excellence, long-term commitment, and uncompromising integrity.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering,  Physics, Electronics Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent, from an accredited university or college.

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of design experience in electrical or electronic design.

  • Demonstrated project management and/or design team leadership experience in a product development environment.

  • Proficient in identifying stakeholder needs and collaborating with teams to define solutions.

  • Ability to operate in an environment of uncertainty when working with the application of new technologies or processes.

  • Strong communication and influencing skills with the ability to engage and inspire both one-on-one as well as in broad audiences.

  • Exceptional organization, written, and presentation skills.

  • Self-starter, persistent, thorough, objective, and accountable.

  • Effective at active listening, building trust, being inclusive, providing encouragement, inspiring teams, providing corrective feedback, and being open to new ideas and ways of achieving success.

  • Lean mindset-oriented with a focus on continuous improvement, visual management, and standard work.

  • Working knowledge of Project Management and/or Program Management fundamentals.

  • Deep knowledge of electronic circuit design, circuit board design and processes.

  • Experience with and knowledge of industry development and DO-254 certification standards and processes.

  • This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college.

  • Knowledge and experience in developing and specifying complex avionics systems.

  • Prior experience as a people leader. 

  • Persistent, thorough, and execution-focused.

  • Demonstrated success in engineering and product development.

  • Familiarity with ARP 4754A and related regulatory guidance documents such as D0160 and DO254.

  • Chair or an active participant in a design board, or participation on relevant industrial or technical society boards.

  • Experienced with EMC and thermal testing and/or product qualification.

  • Demonstrated professionalism in demeanor and presentation to include excellence in questioning, listening, and influencing.

  • Demonstrated capability to constructively partner and drive alignment across matrixed organizations.

  • Highly visible, hands-on approach while setting the example for high standards and accountability for the organization.

  • Experienced with Earned Value and Activity Based Management methods.
