The Aerospace Quality Inspector performs inspections on incoming materials, work-in-process, and final products, documents approvals and nonconformances, and supports continuous improvement of inspection processes. The position also contributes to problem-solving activities and may provide training on quality and manufacturing processes to production personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed inspections on newly received goods, work-in-process components, and final machined aerospace parts and assemblies to ensure full compliance with engineering requirements, work instructions, and customer specifications.
  • Determine and use appropriate inspection methods and instruments, including micrometers, height gauges, air gauges, radius gauges, calipers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and other precision tools to complete in-process and final inspections.
  • Set up and perform simple to moderately complex layouts and inspections on a surface plate, ensuring accurate measurements and adherence to tolerances.
  • Operate a CMM using open set-ups to verify part dimensions and features according to drawings and technical documentation.
  • Initiate nonconformance records for parts that do not meet requirements, document findings clearly, and support the disposition of nonconforming parts.
  • Complete First Article Inspections in accordance with AS9102 and applicable company and contractual requirements, ensuring thorough documentation and traceability.
  • Document inspection results accurately, including approvals and nonconforming conditions, and maintain records in accordance with quality management system requirements.
  • Participate in internal problem-solving activities to identify root causes of nonconformances and help determine rework, re-inspection, or corrective actions as needed.
  • Recommend and support the implementation of process improvements to enhance inspection effectiveness, efficiency, and overall product quality.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external personnel to troubleshoot issues, address inspection errors and trends, and negotiate resolutions for nonconforming parts and required rework or re-inspection.
  • Provide quality and/or manufacturing process training to manufacturing personnel as needed to reinforce quality standards and inspection requirements.
  • Use advanced mathematical skills to perform calculations related to dimensions, tolerances, and measurements using fractions and decimal equivalents.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, planning and engineering documents, quality standards, customer specifications, and other technical design standards to guide inspection activities.
  • Maintain consistent, reliable on-site attendance at the workplace to support production schedules and quality objectives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the quality department and overall manufacturing operations.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in inspection for machined parts and/or assemblies, preferably in the aerospace industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately read and interpret blueprints, planning and engineering documents, quality standards, customer specifications, and other technical design standards.
  • Advanced mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using fractions and decimal equivalents.
  • Proficiency in accurately reading and using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, tape measures, and similar devices.
  • Hands-on experience using micrometers and calipers for dimensional inspection of machined components.
  • CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) experience, including the ability to operate a CMM using open set-ups.
  • Experience in quality inspection, quality control, and quality assurance within a manufacturing or aerospace environment.
  • Knowledge of aerospace quality standards and practices, including AS9100 and AS9102 First Article Inspection requirements.
  • Ability to perform visual inspections and quality checks, including the ability to distinguish colors accurately.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to document findings clearly and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to regularly stand and walk throughout the facility, including manufacturing areas, and to lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb steps, stairs, or ladders regularly and occasionally bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or kneel as required by inspection tasks.
  • Sufficient visual acuity to accurately read precision measuring instruments and examine parts, and the manual dexterity to use hands and fingers to operate computer keyboards and measurement tools.
  • Willingness and ability to work a Monday through Friday schedule from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with overtime as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate degree or similar post-secondary or vocational training in a related field is preferred.
  • Aerospace manufacturing or aerospace quality assurance experience is preferred.
  • Experience with aviation quality assurance practices and standards.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 quality management system requirements.
  • Experience performing First Article Inspections in accordance with AS9102.
  • Experience in a machine shop environment, including exposure to hazardous equipment such as forklifts, hand tools, cranes, and other lifting devices.
